Any reason not to go with Vodafone for FTTP?

I can finally get FTTP. Looking on Uswitch the cheapest provider for 900mbps is Vodafone at £35pm. This is a lot cheaper than the other providers (next is £39 and then most are £40+). Is there a reason why they are cheap? Is there any reason not to go with them? Thak you.

They have pretty poor support/service, have had reports of congestion issues, and if you use your own router it's pot luck if they give you the right details. Personally they are on my avoid list.

I've 2.5 years with Vodafone on a "Pro" 500mb/s Openreach (which is usually more expensive than a CityFibre Vodafone area) fttp connection. Biggest issue I've experienced is there was a phase of being routed through Edinburgh as they were doing network upgrades apparently (I'm in the West Midlands) which lasted around 3 months, though that has now been resolved for the last year or so (i've sub 10ms pings to google/BBC) and no packet loss. Also, within the whole period i've had 90 minutes of downtime (overnight, so the only way I noticed was via logging, which puts me in mind it was exchange works).

Currently back to paying £32 a month after renegotiating in March (as they do the whole % rise every year increase). I use my own router (a homemade Raspberry Pi 5) with no issue and what ChrisD says above is correct make sure they send you the logon details rather than you transcribing, though personally they got mine correct.

For what they charge and for what you get it is a very good service in my experience, but you won't get the same support (but you aren't paying the same price) as other more boutique providers.

Edit - added detail.

Yes I would want to use my own router. Thank you.

Thanks.

PlusNet is £39.99, plus £60 cash back. You also have the option of static IP.
Thanks. Yes that was my second option and customer service reviews seem better than Vodafone. I wasn't aware of the static IP option. That could be useful. Thank you.

It may have changed, but the last I knew it was a £5 one off payment.

I'm with Aquiss myself, but I'd have no hesitation on going with PlusNet. I've been with them on and off over the years, my mum has been with them for 10 years+ and they've been absolutely fine to deal with.

Good to know, thanks. If it's still an option then the static IP is worth the extra £5 a month over Vodafone for me, with better customer support an added bonus. I'll look into it thank you.

I switch between Voda and Plusnet every couple of years to get the new customer deals but have currently been with Voda without a break for 3 years. I always use my own equipment and have never had an issue getting the credentials.

I had to log an intermittent sync issue with Vodafone and I'd already completed the usual troubleshooting (test socket, new filter, new router etc) before I called up but I was still expecting a bit of faff. It turned out to be pretty smooth sailing with the fault logged to Openreach straight away and an engineer out and fault fixed within a couple of days. Of course, if you end up with a tricky fault it may not be as quick to resolve and that may be where you end up wishing you'd paid a bit more for better support.

I went from Voda FTTC to Plusnet FTTC, then back to Voda for 500Mbps FTTP and now 900Mbps FTTP for £32/month. They had a big outage the day after I moved to FTTP which affected a large portion of the country but apart from that, it's been very reliable and I hit consistently max speeds.

Other than they may randomly route your traffic to Edinburgh in the name of load balancing without grasping the latency implications if you are closer to London, have frankly useless CS/TS, a nasty habit of moving goalposts and the hardware is… well I wouldn’t use it, but there are worse options and for most people, they will be fine for most things.

We’re out of contract period now and has just left it as was as cheap as any current deal.

Until today when I got a Black Friday email from them, 500meg for £22 or 910meg for £28 (am on 500meg currently).

Might just do the 500meg for £22 offer and renew with them!
