Any SE P990i users here?

Been out of the mobile phone loop for about 3 months... Er, does the latest firmware for the P990i fix all the memory leaks that the phone suffered from? I read reports that if you tried to do more than two things at once the phone would go incredibly slow/crash quite often?

The latest version is supposed to be much better, but I'm still stuck on the Voda branded firmware so couldn't give you first hand experience. However my phone has always been pretty good, especially with Swiss Manager installed.

I've got the latest version (R4B03 I think) and it is definitely much quicker than the original firmware that came with it, and a lot of the bugs/niggles/quirks are gone. Memory usage is much improved, I've only had the odd crash since upgrading which has mainly been when using opera and opening webpages with loads of images.

Whats this Swiss manager?

Swiss Manager is a composite system utility for UIQ3. It provides task manager, file manager and system information services, giving you more access to and more knowledge about your phone.

Major features:

Management of running programs (task information, task switch, task exit)
Release memory by exiting all running programs at once, optionally when closing the flip
Navigation throughout the phone's drives and their entire file system
File management (copy, move, delete, rename)
Displaying the amount of free memory and disk space
Useful system information (device characteristics, system uptime, battery level, IMEI number, etc.)

Excellent piece of programming and definitely worth buying for the P990i.

I refuse to believe that  I restart mine at least 3 times a week, not because it starts slowing down but because something like Web or Messaging crashes to the point that the programs cannot be started any longer. I also get applications randomly crashing while in the middle of a call, although the call stays on; I'm on O2's latest firmware but I don't know if it's as up to date as SE's actual firmware (version R9EC001, Organizer is R4B03 if that means anything). Actually, the recent firmware update made my Web program even more unstable.
I was blown away by the phone at the start and thought everything was hunky dory for the first week or two until I started using a lot of its functionality.

My camera application is extremely slow to load up, and there's been 3 or 4 occasions where I've tried to take a photo of something interesting or funny but by the time the application loaded, the moment had passed.

My scheduled email downloads make the phone fall over altogether. I tried setting it to download every 15 minutes and every time it went to download, the phone just crashed. And the phone is relatively free of any third-party applications, I've very little installed (not even Swiss Manager but I did use the trial), all I have extra is a custom Windows Vista theme.

The recent firmware update helped things a little (ie. I could use it for longer before needing to reboot) but gave me nowhere near the amount of improvement that some people were mentioning. At the same time, I wouldn't have any other phone at the minute. No other model of phone suits me right now, I need a phone with PDA functions rather than PDA with a rubbish phone app stuck on top. I use a hell of a lot of its features and give it a lot of use every day, both in talking and in using applications.

Think I'll pack it up and send back to Vodafone. Shame really.

Says it all really, network branded P990i's are absolutely crap tbh. Would have been better if you had picked up a sim free version tbh. Have had mine for almost a yr and dont suffer from random crashes or slow-down. Plsu the generic SE firmware is much faster and better than the network ones.

I don't think it does 'say it all really' though. The only Vodafone branding is the logos on startup and shutdown. Other than that there is no evidence of Vodafone tampering with anything and it's exactly the same as a SIM free version.

What I find strange is that straight from boot up and into Swiss Manager it reports that there is only 20% of RAM free (13 MB) and that's only with 3 tasks running. It's no wonder as soon as you open up Messaging/Media player/Contacts... that the whole thing grinds to a halt.

It does to me though, ive read plenty of accounts where network branded p990i's were giving customers plenty of headache..

Hmmm only 20% free ram after booting up??, that is kinda low..i get on average about 80% of my ram free at start up...i think its usually about 17MB free. Like i said with the network branded handsets, you wont be able to put the generic SE firmwares on it...which is probably the main reason why the network branded ones tend to have the most problems.

Indeed, the Orange one I have is based on the R7 firmware TWO firmwares behind SE. To make it worse Orange have NO plans to upgrade the firmware to any other version

To be fair though, yes it does crash, but it works ok 90% of the time.

Guys, my Voda branded 990i is actually unlocked, if i upgrade the FW will it apply any locks to the phone?

Good question, just checked my Voda P990i with an O2 sim card and yep its still unlocked after the firmware update.

This is just 1 phone though i cant say it will be the same for others but i recon it probably will.
