I'm very curious to see how much of a bottleneck Socket A processors are to this high-end GPU.

I don't think I can warrant £360 on this GPU when my CPU would be limiting it's full potential!

So calling all Socket A users (I know some are still loitering around) with the 7800GS.

Could you post your benchmarks & results for me please?

Thank you!

depends on the cpu and the game and your settings.

with xp3200 and 7800gs your gpu limited at 1024x768 with all details up to max in games like FEAR, Oblivion, GRAW, and a few other new games.

Or even a socket 754 with a PCIE slot and a good card. Sempron and board £100, X1800XT £190, you're still quids in.

i was playing bf2 on a 2400mhz athlon (which is pretty much as quick as they go) and heavy action would make the fps drop to like 30, from 100. got an opteron 146 and its 100fps all the time at the same settings. obviously that game rapes the cpu more than most other games, but its a good indication that socket a doesnt cut the mustard anymore.

is that card really £360 ?? u could buy an opteron 144, asrock sli board and a 7800gt for the same or less!

My a64 @ 2.4ghz bottlenecks a x1800xt, when I do a slight overclock of 300mhz = a extra thousand in 3dmark 05.
So I imagine socket A cpu's and 7800 agps have a massive bottleneck.

Wait a second, just checked, your willing to spend £360 on a graphics card for socket A, why dont you just do over all your system?
Keep you ram, buy a cpu/mobo and PCI-e card, £360 is a big enough budget for that, x1800xt £180, cpu 60-80 members market, board £40, there you go.

This is a much more worthwhile upgrade than an AGP 7800gs.

I thought a high end Sempron would cope? am I incorrect with this? I would be most interested in seeing graphs to support this, just out of interest!

No a sempron is wasted on a x1800xt, so is a low clocked venice, my venice at 2.4ghz only scored 7800 at stock, at 2.7ghz it scored 8800 and I think theres still a quite a lot more I can get if I had a highly clocked opteron.

Not a waste of a time, but could you handle knowing your card could be running faster if it wasnt for your cpu?

Just get a opteron and clock it high, they only cost a little more.

I see this card looks best value out of the 7900 series

Gainward BLISS Geforce 7900 GT "Goes Like Hell" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-034-GW) Price: £279.95 (£328.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Just think with two of them in sli 1Gb graphics memory. (Drools) :D

hah, your a fool if you think that will count as 1 gig of graphics ram.
sli is a waste, both cards need to keep a local copy of all the texture data etc so 2 x 512mb cards are still seen in total as only having global 512mb ram available NOT 1 gig.

efficiency of sli is crap and its a waste of money paying for 2 cards and not getting a 100% increase in speed. better off waiting for next generation of cards to appear.
