i might be asking an impossible question, im not sure!!

any thougths on a worthwhile card for about £50-60?
just a half decent one to tide me over, if i can play games at medium settings or so and isnt any worse than my old one, thatll do for now.

(-type of use: single player, call of duty mw2, sniper:ghost warrior, splinter cell 5, etc. monitor is 19" viewsonic 924 at 1280x1024)

id much prefer a new one (2/3 year warranty!), but what should i look out for when it comes to used cards ie how do you tell it hasnt been well used and wont break a week later??

any recommendations would be useful
many thanks

pc spec:
asus a8n-sli, n force 4 mobo, 550w psu, 4gb ddr ram (pc 3200, 400mhz)
athlon 64 x2 4800+ dual core processor, 300gb hard drive, windows xp sp3
256mb nvidia geforce 7800gtx- not operating anymore!

Puzzled!!
ive never quite worked out the different catagories/sequence of cards.
on nvidia.com it implies that the 9800 gt is a few generations behind gt 430
(and dont get me started on 9800 gtx & gts 250!!)

could you be specific about this please, in what area is it better?
cheers

OK well to start with you can't just compare generations. A mid to top end card from one generation may well beat a lower card from a later generation or two. Unfortunately there are no direct comparisons of the 430 and 9800GT.

However, all reviews of the 430 suggest it performs on a par (in DX9/10) with a 240. If you check around on benchmark comparison sites you will find that a 9800 beats the 240 by a fair degree. Which means it will similarly beat the 430 also by a fair degree.

thanks for the explanation about card sequences.
its been suggested elsewhere that the best option would be to get a second hand 9800gt for £35/40
the only ones ive seen were £60/70 and upwards.
is there a recommended place to get second hand graphics cards (and other pc components) apart from the obvious auction site?

I would go down the second hand route and get a 4870 or similar.

There's simply no value for a brand new card at around £60 although might just about find a 4850 for that.

The members market on here requires 3 months membership and over 250 posts.

would there be any compatability issue with my system, if i used a radeon card?
someone told me i would have to stick to nvidia because of the on board nvidia chipset, n force 4 and cpu etc??
also if i was to fit two cards in sli?

pc spec:
asus a8n-sli deluxe, n force 4 mobo, 550w psu, 4gb ddr ram (pc 3200, 400mhz)
athlon 64 x2 4800+ dual core processor, 300gb hard drive, windows xp sp3

i got an 8800gts second hand for £9 and it seems to handle most modern games on close - to - max, on a 20" screen. Some games can go all the way to max, such as blackops and modern warfare 2.

If you prefer a new card with a warranty, then the 9800gt linked previously really is a good option. Its a solid card for the price, and several steps up from your 7800gx.
