Any swimmers here?

My one does too so I'm expecting that to make a difference too.

Nice one. My mate who convinced me to do this tri finds swimming easy too, he does 5k fairly regularly but doesn't like the long cycles/runs. Ironman is a hell of a feat. One for the bucket list though

The other thing is wear jammers.

I'd suggest focusing solely on technique first, before even thinking about what distance you're covering.
this yes
.. personally I'd perfect breathing on one side first, doing that and breathing on every right arm entry I have breath to spare, if there is some obstruction, to be able to get to next stroke.
Not sure about the 110% out/exhausting your breathe strategy, since although it forces you to take breath, can find the vacuum it creates pull water back into the nose ..... it should/will feel natural at the end of the day, and can do it with your eyes closed.

I have still never been in a situation where I can get a video of myself swimming .. always feel that would really help in the debug of problems, in addition to advice.
heart rate monitors are hassle/inconvenient, but I think they could enable me to better compare the effort swimming versus running.

Honestly your lungs need to be empty before you mouth exists the water on the breath.

Also do not focus on one side it will just make bi-lateral even harder.

Slow down, even if you can unly manage 6 strokes. Stop standup and do it again.

you mean to learn or real life ?

in real life depending on physiology you can have lung capcaity exceeding what you need for the stroke effort .. but I don't expel what remains, to a greater level than normal, asynchronous, out of water breathing .. could some carbon dioxide exhaust left in what I've kept.

I believe this is the theory,

I took some lessons many years ago before all it got out of control, I started swimming to avoid traffic on the commute and lose some weight, which then trickled down to triathlons I am not going to be break any records maybe a top 10 finish for my age group but i will never be in a position to hit the number 1 spot its down to PB`s and being bad at 3 sports instead of one :)

Anyway i digress, my swim coach at the time always said 100% empty lungs before the in breath, as anything left is effectively bad air, for short swims its not a problem but when your a fat middle aged bloke doing 800m + it builds up and makes you tense as your holding a air which is not normal, sounds daft when your swimming i know. Innnn, Outtttttttttttttttttttttt, Innn, Outtttttttttt All it is is practice.

I agree with you on the video, its beyond stupid while swimming pools will not let use video for recording a swim to aid your swimming. Sledgehammer to crack a nut syndrome again.

Sorry to hijack.

I'm looking to join my local gym to take full advantage of their swimming pool, I'm obese and probably at the heaviest i've ever been, I've never been fit in my entire life, but I've always been a confident strong swimmer due to having swimming lessons for a good number of years when I was younger.

I've gotten to a point where i struggle to go on a simple walk where after 5 mins I start to get pain in my back which i'm quite ashamed of that i've gotten myself to that stage where I can't even take a simple walk to town or whatever with my mates without struggling with pain and drenched in sweat.

I know swimming is a low impact exercise but very effective for weightloss and muscle growth (Especially for someone who barely uses their muscles) since you're using all your muscles to get you going, What's the most effective swimming technique? I've always thought breast stroke was the more intensive exercise in the pool.

Cheers.

If you're able to, it would be good to cycle through all 4 different strokes as you'll end up working more muscle groups.

Breaststroke is the slowest of the 4 strokes, but it's easy to cheat on this one and still remain buoyant. so it depends on how much effort you're truly applying. But if performed properly, any of the 4 strokes are going to be a good workout.

All the best in your swimming. Hope to hear significant progress in the near future.

Thanks for that, think to start a combo of front crawl and breast stroke would be a good starter, I hope I can stick it out this time, i'll update with progress.

How do I get from 1.50 50mSC sets to 1.30, my technique is pretty decent also.
Hello, I was a good swimmer when I was young and I continue to swim in master group (I can still swim under a minute at 100m free)
Swimming is not about brute force. You can see children swimming very fast!
The secret is to glide on the water as smoothly as possible without resistance.
To improve, you have first to focus on technique, and the best way to improve your technique is with a good coach watching you swimming (I can give you tips if you have a video)
Then, you have to improve your heart and endurance by doing a lot of training and workout. I advise you to go to a swimming club for that (adult or master group).
It's the most effective way and more fun to swim with an enthusiastic group :)
