An internet friend of mine ( and American so can't get to her PC directly ) used a site to check compatability of her PC with a game she wants to play.

The following is the result...

the processor speed seems odd to me but I don't know intel well at all so hoping you guys can shed some light on it. To me it seems her PC is underclocked.

Actually, underclocked is a strong possiblity.

If she's got a P4 -B, with a 533Mhz FSB, and her motherboard is either an old model that only supports the 400mhz FSB or FSB speed is incorrectly selected in bios, then a 2.4 processor would be forced to run at 1.8ghz.

If the bios supports it, she needs to set it to 533Mhz.

Im willing to bet it's a genuine 2.4Ghz P4, as the CPUID is normally correct even if you underclock, or overclock a cpu.

P4's basically come in 3 flavours, 400, 533 and 800mhz FSB, normally in bios you can pick 'auto detect' and it will get it right, but sometimes you have to set it yourself.

If she installs CPUID, that will show the CPU's true identiy, and also the FSB speed, and all info needed to work out if the computer is incorrectly configured.

i put my money on this.....

If its a P4, won't it have Intels power saving feature running that under-clocks the CPU when it is idle? Can't think what it is called off the top of my head, but you should be able to disable it in the BIOS. :)

Speedstep, only on the newer CPUs and their mobile ones AFAIK

Yeh, SpeedStep, thats what I was trying to think of:)

Didn't know it was only on the newer ones... I'm not an Intel person I'm afraid. Haven't owned one since back in the days of my old P133!

it could be worth checking it out with a seperate program... try something like CPUz ?
it would be a quick and easy way of making sure its either running at 1.8GHz (like that says) or 2.4GHz (like it should).

much easier for her to check that than start out tinkering with the BIOS etc... :)

Thanks everyone, she had a look in the BIOS and it was set manually to 100FSB.. instead of manual she had 2400 as an option so set that and funnily enough it works and apparantly she does notice the performance increase especially in her current favourite game - oblivion.

yea she would do, a 1.8ghz p4 would be painfully slow lol
