Basically I'm with vodafone. They are the only company I have found that gives me a good signal at home and work.

Trouble is every year its the same.

I wanna upgrade, they say fine. What phones do you want. I list two that are available for free on my contract if I was a new customer.

They say fine, that will be £45 per phone. I say its available for free they say only to new customers.

I write a letter to cancel, they phone me up and offer me the phones I want for free.

The whole game does my head in, anyone know any good tips for getting what you want first time. Or am I doomed to keep playing this game?

phone up and ask what you have to do to quit or I think there is an option where it says 'if you are thinking of leaving vodafone', talk to those chaps.

I tried that last year, got nowhere. Last year they wanted to charge me £120 per phone, a 6230 and a k750. I had to get to the letter stage to get anywhere.

My best tip would be to spend more....

Why though?

When phone companies try to charge you for a phone. You can always bump them down by some amount and quite often get them to give it you for free (some phones are obviously to expensive for this blah blah).

Why when they are willing to give it him for free if he writes a letter don't they do it when he phones up?

Yes yes, the business blah blah comes in.

But then when they try and charge him but he says no, they can not then offer the phones for less or free?

probably goes through different departments in retention?

Or more likely because you cant cancel a vodafone contract over the phone they take the actual letter as the final warning of the customer leaving.

They might as well just give a customer who's upgrading the same phones that can be had for free when joining as a new customer. I'd happily cancel my contract and start afresh just to get the phone for free, so they might as well just offer that in the first place.

What you do if you want to upgrade.

Phone up, say you want to migrate your contract number to PAYG, which is in fact getting out of contract. They will then transfer you to their retention department, who will be able to give you the deal new customers get.

I've done it 4 times, and it has always worked. Best if you shop around and find out the best deal in the market, then put it to them if they want to continue with you, to give you that deal, or you will migrate your contract number to PAYG.

I'm also with vodafone and have the same charade every year.
This time i just kept ringing and speaking to different people.
Eventually i got either the N73 or the K800 for free and 6 months half price line rental.
My monthly spend is only £20 aswell.

Apparently theres a lot more hassle and cost if you actually cancel, change your number and start a new contract with the same network, so in store its not looked upon as a good thing. We'd rather you stay with your same contract, but try and wangle some kinda deal to make you stay.
