any tips for transporting PC with big cooler?

on the weekend i'm going to have to move my PC back to uni. before this wasnt a problem having it strapped in the back seat of my dads car because it only had the standard cooler. however, it now has a giant cooler attached to it, so transporting it could break my motherboard.

since the cooler actually pushes slightly against the side of my case i was planning on laying the PC on its side so the cooler is resting on the floor, but, aside from using a lot of string around the heatpipes, i cant think of anything i can do to support the cooler while i carry the PC

anyone got any bright ideas?

i meant to say that i dont have any TIM left, so i cant remove it

is it not possible to remove it? im pretty sure most people remove the HSF and GFX cards if they are heavy to be safe. i know it can be a pain when you get to the other end, but better than finding its fallen off and damaged other components.
 
if you lay the case flat (on its side, with the mobo at the bottom) im sure it wont be a problem unless you have a huge heatsink and a poor quality mobo pcb :p
 
yeah remove it is definitely the best option.

or...


you could always get some balsa wood and stuff it in there between all your add-on cards down to the bottom of the case....


or....


you could get some piano wire, drill 2 holes in the top of your case and thread the piano wire through, tie it up so its supporting the heatsink.....

OR!!!!!

get a teleportation gun and shoot your case so it moves to its destination.

Suppose this would be a good time to treat yourself to some good thermal compound if you have not already, and im assuming you will be bringing it back from uni within the year too?

to be honest, its going to be moved about quite a lot, especially for the next month, so i really dont want to remove it all the time
 
You sig says you got a 955 stock, why do you need such a big arse cooler? Cant you just take it off and replace it with the stock cooler for now, (thats if yoo still got it) and once you have stopped moving about, then put the big ******* back on. ;)

i need the big cooler for two reasons

1. the standard cooler makes more noise than a jet plane crashing into a fireworks factory.
2. i plan on overclocking, but i've just been to lazy to do it this week (only had the cooler for a week or so)
 
ok. :D ive got the same chip with the standard cooler and its not that bad, saying that it is the nosiest fan in my case tho, aprat from the gfx card one under load. The only other option i can think of, and what i would do if i had a big arse cooler on my MB, would be to fabricate some sort of bracket up that holds the cooler in place, like connects to the cooler and bolts onto the case somewhere.

you either have a REALLY loud graphics card, or the standard cooler is running a lot slower for you.

when i use prime95 for a while the old cooler would go up to 6850RPM. WAY louder than my GTX460. at idle (2500RPM ish) it was just fine though)

my GFX card (asus ENGTX460 TOP): 51.9db
your graphics card (6950): 50.5db

however, one thing i have noticed is that my fan never goes above ~60%, which makes it really quiet. i suspect their sample went up to 100%, which is anything but quiet

Tbh the only time i hear my gfx card is when i turn the pc on, it spins full pelt for a second or 2 and thats it, but adjusting the fan speeds on amd overdrive, at 100% fan speed it sounds like its gunna take off, but not heard it when ive been gaming tho. Considering ive only had the card a day so i cant really comment on its noise.

When reading the reviews of the 955BE, some people were saying its noisy, some saying its quiet, might me a motherboard thing making the fan spin faster? Or could just be down to some got noisy fans, some are loud, i dont know, but mine aint that bad that it warrants changing it. But i am on the lookout for a new cooler as i to want to overclock, when i can be bothered, other things first tho.

Good luck with the transporting, best and easiest option as what got said. Lay it on its side, motherboard down, always transport it that way, dont let anyone else touch it or move, keep and eye on it so its secure, be extra careful with it etc.

also use if u got a big cooler and gpu anyways
stops gpu bendng and stops cooler stressing the mobo

or if yr gonna transport it on the side so cpu faces up u can just take the gpu out and stuff the inside of the pc with news paper or bubble wrap wot eva u have handy make sure its stuffed enough to actually support the cpu cooler but not too much that u break things off yr mobo lol basicly anything to stop it moving side to side
