Any use for a 3.06 p4 nowadays?

My old 754 3700+ clawhammer played 720p files with no problem

Was using CoreAVC to get it working smoothly.

My girlfriend has a P4 with 1GB of RAM and for a general web browsing machine it's fine. It's not so good at Photoshop mind!

Oh the good ol days, I remember my 3GHz P4, I thought something was wrong when it was hitting 70 degrees on an AC Freezer 4.

I'm stuck on my 3.4GHz Prescott..still, 2GB DDR2, HD4670 1GB, it's hanging in there :)

(...I just about max out crysis...I'm not telling you how many fps though :p)

But seriously, photoshop, supreme commander..can get rather painful at times..:(

office use as in just doing boring work/ college work low end gaming and stuff

It would make a perfectly adequate office box. But I wouldn't use it for anything else. If you're buying a new motherboard and ram for it you might as well get a cheap Core 2 Duo aswell.

Also you mentioned it's a P4 3.06 (with a 533mhz bus), I think that speed only came in socket 478. The board you're talking about sounds like a 775 board.

Bear in mind the 3.06B only has a 533mhz FSB which will limit performance even further (it's a bit slower than a 3.0C in most cases). Some modern games also now struggle on single-core CPUs.

As a general rule of thumb I don't think it is worth throwing money at hardware that is over 5 years old unless you are SURE you have a good use for it. Buying a new mobo for a cpu that old seems like a waste to me, when you consider that a £50 brand new cpu like the E5200 is way, way quicker.

Folding@home machine? Not the most efficent or the highest producer you could own but every little helps. Could also use it for a file server or something.

I'm going to suggest testing to see if its a faulty motherboard or processor with a rig that won't post. fairly rare requirement I know.

I'm comforted to see people think a P4 is capable of some things as with luck I'll be running one soon. Anyone know offhand how it compares to a 7750BE? Two cores, 2.7ghz, amd. Definitely not phenom 2.

Thanks for all the different angles folks. I have to agree the reason I posted this question was because I didn't think it made sense to throw money at a cpu this old although 5 years ago to have this chip and board probably would have been the shiz-nit. I Think I'll just sell it on the bay.
