Have got a file on a network share that is apparently locked by something and I need to overwrite it.

Anyone know of any utilities that can show me what exactly is causing the lock so I can remove it?

Would love to, but unfortunately I don't have access to the server.

I may have to resort to calling up desktop support and having them take 3 days to resolve the issue!

your network administrator should be able to tell you who has the file lock within 2 minutes...
Yeah, that's not how it works here. The joys of working for a large company.
We have to phone up a number, they enter our request into another application and then at some unspecified time in the future someone resolves it!

How about telling them it's dead urgent? either that or sneaking into the admin room and logging onto the server to have a peek yourself.....

only a stupid server admin would allow all domain users to log on lol

Stupid server admins make a lot more mistakes than that:

* they leave their console to the server open whilst away
* they write passwords down on pieces of paper, hidden in their bottom drawer

But the best approach is just to walk in their room and ask them directly what your problem is.

Well I managed to get round it in the end by creating a new folder without the offending file and then re-building that one!

We're not even allowed on the floor where all the servers are kept here, to be honest I don't even know whether this fileserver is in our building!

Things are very strict here, I work for a large bank and it's all very tightly controlled and regulated.
