Hi,

Just did the training course last week and looking to do the exam this Friday.

Any advice, recommendations, etc? How did you find the exam?

Thanks,

M.

I'm one.

Which course did you do? Fast track, install and configure or t'other one?

Basically, if you do the fast track (which is both the 4 day courses), you won't pass the exam without reading all the documentation on the VMWare site.

Read everything here under the Main Documentation Set. Pay particular attention to config maximums and resource manager.

And the exam is easy enough if you know your stuff, it lets you go forward/back/review... normal stuff. Think it's about 70 odd questions, an hour and a half, I finished after 20-30 mins and spent 10-15 mins going over the questions to make sure I knew I'd gotten over the pass mark.

Yes I did the Fast Track 3.5 course (5 full days which is unusual for a course).

I'll check all the documentation one of the guys had passed the exam then came on the course and recommended the 'limits' document (basically all of the stuff it supports such as amount of LUN's, etc.) so I'll go with that (as it's been seconded now!)

I'll have a look at the link now - I've done a fair bit of study but it'll be interesting to see if my studying areas are the same as the exams!

Thanks!

Who did you do the Fast Track with?

I did the Fast Track and scheduled the exam for 2 weeks after. Reading all the documentation on the VMWare site and doing a few exam tests was all that was needed really.

I got 910/1000 from memory and I got caught out on questions that weren't necessarily about ESX... and included fusion and server!

Did the Fast Track with a company in Birmingham called ETC. The training was really good in all fairness and I did learn a hell of a lot (mainly towards the HA side of things).

Didn't realise there were questions in there about Fusion (eek!) so I guess I'll have to have a look at that - the only things I'm getting slightly confused on in the test exams is the massive multiple choice ones where they have several yes's but don't mention how many ticks they want! Arrrgh!

Yes I'm one. I'd also read up on capacity planner. Had to wing a few questions on that.

Best of luck, I found it to be a pretty tough exam although I didn't do as much revision as I'd have liked due to heavy work commitments.

I'm one, currently contracting doing VMware stuff for a large corporate (well over 100 hosts)

The VCP is a good starting point, but like MCSE etc etc its just where the learning begins !

Oh some trivia i learned only the other day, HA isn't a VMware piece, its a product called AAM bought from Legato, although Legato was later bought by EMC anyway....

Always wondered why the HA logs were in a directory called AAM, never bothered to find out though !

Suprised they didn't tell you that on the VCP course, they did in mine, taught by one of the Magirus instructors (Gareth). He seemed to be a pretty experienced trainer + had used linux for a long long time which probably helped familiarity with ESX COS.

Stolly: Are you working directly with the large corporate or through a virtualisation consultancy? Drop me a PM if you know of any jobs going there.

/stolly: just sent you an email... Ta

Got the email :)

I'll reply in a mo'

I did the course with Magirus some time ago, the bloke was OK but some people got the impression he hadn't done much real life stuff. Didn't talk about the service console at all really, apart from the basic stuff in the book at the time.

I'm direct with the customer, through two agencies (don't ask lol)

In the course they did talk about AAM and how they had bought it so that was covered. They also went into the VMWare consolidation side and basically mentioned the down sides (i.e. it's not as good as the products people use who come out and monitor your networks and then make recommendations).

Well I think the exam I am about to take will be either a very low pass or a monumental fail dependant upon the questions I get! Oh well fingers crossed and all that.

Just a quick update and question.

I took the exam today and passed. It wasn't easy to be honest with some questions about other none-vmware products which through me a little but anyway job done.

And now for the question. Is there somewhere you enroll on the VMWare site (like you do for MCP's) where you can get the logos and such like?

Cheers,

M.

Ah thanks for that. The testing centre (well house with a computer in it) was very vague on what happens next.

Thanks again mate.

Thanks very much mate!

Looks like you do a lot of VMWare yourself with those qualifications! I'd look to do the next certificate (VCDX) but the presentation thing is worrying to say the least - you can at least blag it a little in an exam!

Good to see that we have a lot of qualified people around here should we need help!
