Im with sky unlimited upto 20mbps and i get 14mbps (using the online speed test)
From the BT master i have hardwirred a 2meter bt cable that goes straight to the router (bypassing any dogey bt slave wirring), from here i have a 15m ethernet that goes to my pc in bedroom.

Is it possible to improve on this to get more speed?

Is there a drawback to that at all? Why is this not done automatically?

Hers my stats.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17021 kbps 938 kbps
Line Attenuation 26 db 12 db
Noise Margin 7 db 8 db

What could i expect?

your snr is 7db that a bit high, can ask sky to reduce to 3db. (or you can tweak yourself either dmt tool or routerstats)

I use routerstats and got my line sync rate increase to 20031kbps with snr tweak from 6db to 0.5db and got stable for a months. See below:

Hi,

Ive downloaded DMT v8.07
I use 192.168.0.1 with the cirrect username and password but it doesnt connect.
I went onto the sky router settings and ticked allow remote access it has port 8080 listed there.
I tried logging in on port 8080 but still nothing (although port 8080 does not flash red like the default port 23 does)

What am i doing wrong?

Thanks,
Sean

Its Dark grey case says Netgear on the side, assuming its the Netgear DG934G? Although it only says Netgear on the side.

After some googling it seem sky will NOT lower you snr and that 7db (mine) is there default.
It seems its possible while breaks sky t&c's to run normal netgear firmware on the sky router.
Would this then give me options to lower my snr? any idea what sort of increase i wuold get from lowering it?

Thanks for your help
Sean

If it's Sky then you'll always find the Noise Margin will be around 7 dB. At this number the line will be significantly more stable than one with a lower margin, and lowers speed a touch, and reduces the number of calls that Sky get regarding flaky internet connections.

17021 kbps is more or less right for the line, given a normal noise margin.

Can Noise margin be affected on Sky then? I've tried tweaking mine with DG Team firmware and it did nothing.

Strange over sky users forum, there is lots of them can tweak sky broadband and even mine too. I am sure you find a way to get it mate. I dump rubbish sky router and use my own Netgear DGND3700 instead.

I dont see why you would want to ytweak your line anymore... your sync'ed at 17 meg and by reducing your snr you could only but make the line worse.

Im synced at 17 but only get 14. Dont get me wrong im more than happy with 14 i download at 1.7mb/s. My line is rock solid stable, never ever drops out or slows down at all. I just though maybe i could get get better speeds for free!

My netgear DGND3700 is very good at holding snr at 0.5db for months without loss of sync rate or loss of connection with very few errors on the line. I suppose my line is very good exspecially on my long line.

Sky's DLM has undergone some changes recently and as a result the SNR margin can drop below 7dB, but the line needs to be stable before this will happen.

Alternatively, you could give Sky a call and ask for your line to be uncapped to let it sync the fastest it can (DLM caps the line during it's initial training period), although this will probably make little difference as you are already on a 7dB SNR margin. It will however help if you decide to tweak the SNR margin because there won't be a limit preventing you from going above a certain sync speed.

It is against Sky's terms and conditions to use another router, but they don't seem to mind that much these days and it is very easy to extract the login details from your router. Go to this site and follow the instructions.

When i asked about Sky and other Routers I was told the staff had been told that if you can get another Router to work on Sky, great, but they won't help you do it, won't supply any info and won't support you unless you plug your Sky Router in first.

This is what i did years ago after sky's DLM capped me to 3.5mb, i rang them up, kept at them about seeing if i could get an increase in speed, tier 1 techs will get you going through hoops, its there job sadly.

With perseverance, you will get put through to tier 2 tech, and they are the ones that will tweak your line for you. They uncapped me, let it run and run found out i could actually get 6.5mb from my line, but with errors, so we both agreed at 5mb with 0 errors which was/still is rock solid.

They will watch the errors, and decide the right speed to minor errors. So ringing them may get you some extra speed, it did for me, and others to. Just keep at it, and try your best to get through to tier 2 guys, may take more then one call, and a lot of please test this and that, but its worth the hassle.

I've called previously and the first person I spoke to tweaked my line for me so some tier 1 staff can change line speeds or have someone they can ask I think.

I have just dug a Linksys WRT54G v5 that i used to use years ago when we was on 'ntl' to enable us to get wireless.
Can it be used? as it doesnt have a modem just router (i think thats right) so from sky modem to this router? would this allow me to change snr or anything??

Thanks,
Sean

No it wouldn't, you need a new MODEM router that allows you to tweak the SNR, some routers that let you tweak the SNR are: Billion 7800N, TP-Link W8960N, Netgear DGN2000, Netgear DG834GT (originally shipped by Sky) to same a few.
