As title says, is there any windows based utils that report how much watts are being within windows.... eg. when playing games, adding in extra disks etc..

I wouldn't have thought this would be possible. As far as I know there is no energy usage censors to report to windows.

A smart UPS has a VA rating, so convert that into watts. Got UPS overhead of course but shouldn't be that much more.

Lost me with the Smart UPS bit.... I thought these were hardware devices?

Is there a piece of software/utility with the same name?

You can get devices that you plug in between the mains and your PSU that will tell you the total power draw, which will also include the PSU inefficiencies.

Smart UPS, with Powerchute software reports on your screen power usage in VA.
Or you could buy a multi-way power black with LED power consumption display.

I'm not sure whether or not you're using a laptop (with Vista), but, if you are, there's a program from Stardock - TweakVista - although, it's not free, but it'll help you work it out within the 30 day trial. It's just a recommendation. :)

I'm using a desktop machine with XP, I have a 480W Tagan PSU and just trying to figure out if I need a bigger supply if I add the following:

More disks
or a more powerful GPU

My current Spec:

Asus A8N motherboard
Opteron 146 - running at 3Ghz
1Gb Mem - running 1:1 with CPU
Adaptec 39160 Card
1 x 146Gb Scsi 15K drive
2 x 72Gb Scsi 10K drives
Geforce 6600GT GPU
DVD Writer
DVD ROM
Floppy drive ???

Will I be able to add more drives, upgrade mem & Graphics Card with my current TAGAN 480W PSU?

Is there anyway for me to figure how much wattage I am using. Someone mentioned a plug in device... Are these readily available?... are they expensive?

pec:

Asus A8N motherboard - 30W
Opteron 146 - running at 3Ghz - 100W
1Gb Mem - running 1:1 with CPU - 20W
Adaptec 39160 Card - 20W
1 x 146Gb Scsi 15K drive - 10W
2 x 72Gb Scsi 10K drives - 20W
Geforce 6600GT GPU - 80W
DVD Writer - 5W
DVD ROM - 5W
Floppy - <1W?

If, and only if you can get everything going at once you won't be drawing more than 300W, infact getting everything loaded is actually impossible. :)

Normally, I'd say about 200W. Idle < 80W.

CR :)

Nice one, cheers, seems I am fine to go ahead and get some disk space added for starters :) and then upgrade my slow GPU and mem.
