Are they any worth while upgrades from a e6850 out at the min. I was thinkign the 4mb cache will maybe a bit limited these days.

Mine is over clocked to 3.6 mhz

i was thinking of either the

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail

or the

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 LGA775 'Wolfdale' "Overclocking E0 Stepping" 3.33GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

Would i see much of a diffrance, or am i better of waiting.

e8600

e8600 all the way - checkout the benching thread - its nearly hitting 5ghz (4.8) on air and they run quicker clock for clock.

Get one of those invest in water cooling and go for 5ghz :D

Thats what i was thinking, i really like my current dual core, and since the e8600 is liek the evolution of the one i have seems like a good choice.

Personally i would stick with what you have. A E6850 at 3.6Ghz is no slouch and is not going to hold you back. My E6600 does everything i throw at it and i noticed no difference in every day use between it and a E8500 clocked to 4.2Ghz. Nehalem is out soon (October) and brings with it a whole new architecture and another new socket (1366). Prices are rumoured to start around $266 dollars so they are not going to be over expensive. If you wait until Christmas then the prices may even come down further with the release of new cores. It's certainly what i am waiting for.

But these new Nehalem chips, would need a new motherboard upgrade, and ram upgrade which would bump the price up a lot. Are the cheapest Nehalems gonna be as good as the best dual cores and qauds out at the min ?

if gaming then i would stick with what you have, however if you are encoding and using programs that will benefit from a quad core on a regular bases, then i would consider a q9550

No. They are going to be much faster clock for clock. I know it's a complete new rig but the next upgrade would need that anyway. A lot of us are holding on for them to be released before we upgrade.

Ok i am thinkign of wating as i can run all games that out at the min no problems. I have a antec 1200 gamign case. Will theses new new mobos fit that case.

Might spend the cash on a new sound card / speaker set up. Want a new toy to play with.

unless they change the form factor of all nehalem MBs to a new form factor that has not yet been used before, it should fit as well as your current MB

Same form factor but a completely different layout. See here. The ram even runs the right way so there should be better airflow across the board.

Looking at the site they mention a lot of the mobos wont have sli support, how true is this likely to be.

With the 4870X2 out why on earth do you want sli? There's always crossfire. Most times a single card is better than a pair anyway. Not all games support sli. There may even be a GTX280GX2 yet. Sli will be provided by some manufacturers using a Nvidia 200 series chipset although it is doubtful if many will be offering this.
