Any worthy upgrades from a 4690k at the moment?

Primary usage is 4K gaming. Rest of system is currently GTX 970 4K monitor and SSD. 8GB RAM.

CPU is running at 4GHz permanently. GPU will be upgraded to something, tbc once 2070Ti is understood.

Just wondering if there are any worthy CPU upgrades at the moment?

Imo it's not even worth thinking about an upgrade for CPU until you have a GPU of 2070 or above performance, for 4K.

Why would you upgrade CPU for 4k? The bottleneck there is almost definitely completely on the GPU.

If he's chasing higher fps at lower resolutions then a CPU upgrade would make sense. Especially on 1080p but probably 1440p too.

Well, you wouldn't, not as the first thing, that's my point. But there is a benefit even at 4K 60fps, because frametimes improvements are noticeable, and also just 4 cores is kind of an edge case of still "good" considering how CPU-demanding some games are (Assassin's Creed, etc.). Example for extrapolation.

Ah yeah, you make a good point re: 0.1% and 1% lows and keeping more consistent frametimes/avoiding framedrops.

With regards to the i5-4690k though, I think it's still got enough in the tank at 4k except maybe in those more CPU heavy games like AC. That said whilst I haven't played Odyssey, Origins doesn't run too badly on my 4670k @ 4.5ghz.

Same question as the OP
BUT....
the Xeon E3-1226 v3 is significantly cheaper than the 4770 or 4790 (non-K) on a certain site, will this work in a Z97 motherboard?
I know it is not overclockable on the multiplier but 4c/8t should be better than 4c/4t

I did have issues with BF1 with my 4670k with CPU at 100% and poor FPS, however since I reinstalled windows it has been much better.

Yes, many times we overlook the OS install and the impact it can have on overall performance.

For the few games that benefit from HT like BF1 and as long as you're not overclocking then it will be slightly better.

yes it would improve performance especially minimums a lot. I replaced my 2500k with a 2600k and minimums doubled on some games.

my mate replaced his 2500k with a xeon e3-1270 since he got it for basically £0 after selling the 2500k and it is a lot better in new games even though the clock speed is lower. the threads really help out on 2017/2018 games.

Thanks, anyone know if I will have any issues dropping a xeon into a Z97 motherboard

Looks like 4790ks are running around £200 second hand :/.
That's very high price for such old CPU with only four cores.
IMO you should wait for release of Zen2/Ryzen 3xxx
Or if motherboard supports them look if you could find some of 4,1GHz boosting Xeon, like E3-1281 v3, at good price.

What motherboard you have?
Motherboard maker's product page has CPU support list.

Just been reading up on Zen2. Will sweat the 4690k for a while longer, thanks all. Sounds like 2019 could be AMD's year for both CPUs and GPUs!

That is what I am looking at, over half the price of a 47xx K
