Anybody else suffer from OcUD

Everytime i visit a friends house and they show me something on their computer system and i see the little 'updates are ready...' icon jiggling in the corner, like a fat petit girl at a party looking for attention, then i check and notice service pack 1 isn't even installed, i die a little inside.

Then one thing leads to another, it starts out with a service pack, swells to updating the graphics drivers and peaks at making sure adobe reader x is installed, not 9 or less.

I think i have a problem :(

Obsessive Compulsive Updating Disorder.

Ha ha ha lol!!

Out of interest, how many times have you 'saved' somebody with a good updating binge, only to then have to apologise for inflicting WGA notifications on them and the dissappearance of their wallpaper? ;)
 
Pretty much every computer I touch, I run all updates that need doing, uninstall the preinstalled McAfee or other anti-virus software whose 30 day free trial ended 3 years ago (biggest pet hate here, massive consumption of RAM and CPU cycles for very little benefit), put MSE on, run some decent cleaning software and tell the owner to use it once in a while, and install Google Chrome. People are amazed at the speed the computer runs, but still refuse to use Google Chrome. ARGH.
 
I update as soon as possible... Now when a few updates kept failing to update on my brother's PC, I spent the entire night trying to sort it out so the updates installed properly :rolleyes: Managed to fix Silverlight and the Adobe reader but not SP1... :(
 
Out of interest, why do people use Adobe? Maybe it's from the versions I've used, but I always find it incredibly bloated and slow. I use Sumatra, which is super lightweight and loads really quickly even on huge PDFs on crappy computers.

Never knew there was other PDF readers :rolleyes: Only started using it since my college kept saving lecture notes, work, etc in PDF form and all the PCs had Adobe reader.
 
Arrggghh the RAGE I get when I switch on my GFs laptop and EVERYTHING needs updating and she is moaning because she's having load of problems with it. Goddamn woman.

This too. Me = "Whats this program for?", GF, Mum, Sister, Grandparents = "Dunno Internet told me to download it" Me = AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGhh

I agree about 9 but X is really good.

But my OCUD has got so bad I don't even ask for permission from the owner any more. I just give them a slap and start updating.
 
No problem :) It really is an awesome bit of software, I can't go back to Adobe Reader.

They use word at your uni? Strange, absolutely everything my lecturers and tutors did was in PDF form. Then again, that was Maths and CompSci lecturers, who are split between computer illiteracy to the point where they couldn't even put notes up on the website, and complete confidence in all things computers. All apart from one lecturer, who never had any lecture notes, and gave every single lecture off the cuff.

I assume you're running OpenOffice? I actually can't understand why Microsoft Office still sells.
 
How is Libre Office different from Open Office? As far as I can tell, they've basically just reskinned it. I only switched to OO on two grounds; firstly it's free rather than a lot of money (chief reason), and secondly, it's faster. What does LO have that's better?
 
As a fellow subscriber to OcUD, I reckon it could actually be a subconscious action to save ourselves future grief. Usually if you spot a PC like that, it means you're the first techy to be around it. There's a good chance therefore that you might be "the techy one" in your circle of friends. So there's also a good chance that when the 1001st MSN Smiley Pack is installed and the PC dies, it's your own time that's going to be spent fixing the PC.

See, your subconscious is trying to save you future work!

The win 7 sp1 bug is extremely annoying. I have had a couple of machines that spend hours applying the pack then declare they cant cope and please install the update readiness tool. Installed that, reapply the service pack, does it work? Hell no. An hour and a half of updating because it's a celeron CPU 2.5" slow spin HDD and it declares NO CAN DO SIR. YOU FAIL
