Steam was awful on release and for the first 2 or 3 years of its existence, but that's to be expected with what was effectively the first major digital distribution platform for games. Now though it's an awesome piece of software and hopefully will only get better once other digital distributors catch up and offer some decent competition.

That is simply not true, there's plenty of releases. It's just that many of the games that are really over-hyped are console ports (over-advertised would be a more appropriate word for them) and the smaller ones don't get that much attention.

You're right and I did state I was only talking about AAA titles.

"AAA" doesn't indicate the quality though, we get multiple COD games each year that are classed as "AAA", and they're crap. :p

"AAA" to me is just defined by whether the game far beyond being "good".

I didn't say it does but it's the main money maker, I was talking from a purely economical view point.

Personally Steam is great, it has its niggles occasionally, although they tend to get ironed out easily, and it's a lot better that it used to be from my experience.

i HATED steam in the old days..nowadays..i couldnt game without it. The deals, the easy patching, the ability to have 100's of games and not have huge boxes taking up room with random discs laying about. Its simply amazing.

Steam has stopped me buying some games that required Steam to play. Because I want to be able to loan games to friends after I've finsihed, or sell them second hand.

I've used Steam for about 4 years without many problems at all. It hardly takes up much disk space and isn't system resource hungry. It can be annoying when they don't tell you some games require you to download extra bloat ware like Rockstar Social Club but I guess that's not Steam's problem. Valve are my favourite games company because all their games are awesome and very good on PC.

Sure the community goes down occasionally but that doesn't stop you playing the games, and the download speeds are always great except when a new game comes out like Left4Dead.

There is the thread in question.

Some of the people there I am guessing are old and stuck in their ways and have no idea what steam is or how good it is or the benefits it offers.

Truth be told, if the game uses Steamworks, they have earned themselves a collectors edition pre-order.

Is it using Steamworks though or is just being sold on Steam and someone has spat their dummy out too early?

A positive move by Ubisoft if they are utilising Steamworks to its full potential on a title as big as this.

WOW

One pre-order it is then.

I have to say, I personally think the Steam matchmaking system is one of the better ones on the PC platform. You very rarely hear of TF2/CSS/L4D player complaining about it.

Those who knock Steam, I can only assume I can only assume have never used the service to its fullest.

It is not like GFWL which is 50/50 agreed to be total donkey ****.

If the game was using GFWL, maybe then they could complain, the fact they have chosen the best platform on the PC at this time can only mean WIN.

In its current guise I have no problem with it - can easily reinstall (aside from games with an extra layer of DRM :( ) swap between PCs, etc. recent versions have been relatively light weight resource wise and easy to use.

Do wish new released titles/AAA were a little cheaper tho, other than that most stuff is well priced.

And the reason being over-saturated market.

Today we're lucky to get 8 or so releases a year, give or take. And it's still growing so they're doing something right. :p

I don't think it's quite that bad. There might not be as many platforms but there are a lot of games in general still being released (even if the main moneymakers can be summed up as big publisher numbered sequels). I'm bombarded with game adverts all over the internet, TV and even radio.

Thanks, that means no sale from me.

Why UBI insists to force offline players into a system mainly geared for online players (“Friendslist, Matchmaking and so on”) is beyond me. It’s like upon installing CoD to be forced to install an “UBI Internet Explorer Toolbar”- unnecessary third party bloatware that will not touch my system.

Ahh that’s a shame I was looking forward to trying it. No dynamic campaign, plus requirement of a parasitic third party program now.
I was trying to overlook the naysayers about the flight model, the graphic models, the possible bugs on launch etc but this nails the coffin shame I was going to buy it.

I guess with DCS and Rise of Flight I’ll have plenty of content to keep my hands full.
Note that Rise of Flight prevents cheats and is able to handle the login process itself, without needing some third party crap like Steam. It also has a dynamic campaign about to release.

DCS also has integrity checks online and no cheats, without third party companies like steam getting their fingers into your computer.
There is no need for Steam unless people want to BUY games with Steam.

They bang on like Steam will kidnap their children and **** in their bed, I dont get the hatred.

Online activations have been a staple of PC gaming for how long now? Get with the programme you clowns.

Please post here - http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=19080 saying how good this is :)

Gimpy, prodding the wasps nest with a point stick I see :D

:)

Anyone know if the collectors edition is only available from Ubi's shop?

I wanted this when it was first announced but generally only purchase digital downloads nowadays so this is great as I get to have the collectors edition AND get to activate it on my Steam account.

Appears so, the initial release statement mentioned it was 'exclusive' to ubishop.

I've got mine on pre-order and it states "This order will be shipped after the release date of 21/03/2011 for IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Collector's Edition."

Which would be cool as it'd hopefully get here for the 25th, though given that lots of other places have started changing their release dates to April it remains to be seen if it's slipped or not.
