Went along to my local club on friday night with my brother who started a few months ago, there's something immensely satisfying about the whole discipline and I think I'll be continuing this :)

Last time I did archery is was just over 20 years ago  but I didn't do too badly and managed to only miss the target twice all evening, both of which were instantly explainable, mind you it was only 20 yards away :)

Are there places that allow you to use the old bows rather than the new fangled fancy stuff? I would love to be able to learn how to use an old Longbow (and yes I know they take a lot of strength to use properly).

The club here allows all sorts from what I can tell, with the exception of crossbows. There was certainly at least one person there on friday using a Longbow.

I'm going to have to look around then :). This is one of those things I have always been interested but never really got around to getting off my rear to go try :D. Tah for piquing my interest again!

Hi, I used to do archery and might take it up again in the summer,

Good fun, takes a lot of skill IMO, most people think you can pick up a bow and be like robin hood, but it takes a lot more than that ;)

Pics of my gear...

I used to shoot a recurve bow which I was borrowing from my local club, one day some knob broke in and stole a few bows.... and the one I used went :(

So.. I started shooting Compound bows which is what the bow above is,

Its a Merlin Max 3000 ( cost £475 a few years back ) I shoot Easton A/C/C arrows which are a aluminium / carbon mix.. £10 each when they were new :o

You also shoot with a release aid, as oposed to the fingertab which you use for recurve,

As you can see in the picture the bow has cams top and bottom, so when you draw back the bow you feel the full draw weight, then the cam rolls over and the draw weight sort of goes to almost nothing , allowing you to get a good aim :)

I need my draw length adjusting though as my arms have got too long :p

Thats a fancy bow TaKeN, i have never shot a compound but used to shoot re-curve a lot until BUSA last summer when my bottom limb snapped just before the start of the competition and being a poor student i couldn't afford to replace my bow. It takes a lot of time to get very good i was shooting for about 5 years but only have a cheapy starter bow. Might try to take it up again in the near future.

i used to when i was a kid, was second in my age group for the north east scotland championships after only going for like 8 months :d

stopped going when i was around 15, thinking of taking it back up again at some point, still have my marksman recurve bow, it's a beauty

Used to dabble a bit way back in my college days, along with swordsmanship too, but never got around to pursuing it when I left college. Wouldn't mind having another blast at it though.

A compound bow? Pfft. :p

+1 :p

Scary things, used to shoot with a mate who was under 16 Uk champion for a while.

We'd be doing clout shooting with re-curves (specially designed arrows shot up to hit a target laid on the ground) while he'd be sitting around bored. He got up, strolled to the line, knocked and loosed and split the 3 inch tall stake holding the target in in half. Scary guy with a scary bow.

Not that I'd trust the beardy wierdies with the longbows either. ;)

Bought a bow last week :)

Excuse the dodgy pics please...

KAP WinstarII (25inch Riser) Recurve bow with KAP T-REX limbs for a total bow size of 70inch and a draw weight of 36lbs, although the gauge in the shop said I was pulling 41.6lbs on it due to my draw length :)

It nearly got very expensive due to my draw and me nearly needing better limbs which were over a hundered pounds more expensive and I was right on the limit of aluminium arrows too, nearly had to get carbon fibre ones at twelve pounds a go

Bow setup with arrow nocked.

Bow taken down into parts, takes very very little time to dismantle and not a lot to assemble either :)

Yes, one of the arrows is missing a nock, somebody did a Robin Hood on it on Sunday and did a great job of trashing it, I have eight so I have a couple spare plus I got some spare nocks and fletches for repairs.

Really enjoying it all so far, except the slight case of sunburn I got on Sunday, must remember sun block next week :)

I've got a couple of medals from when I used to shoot a few years ago. Had to jack it in to concentrate on school and college though :(
