Just wondering if anybody went through university without working? Was it easy with all the funding you get or is it nigh on impossible?

I didn't work while at uni, neither did about 3/4s of people I lived with in halls. Generally parents or gap year earnings helped people through.

I guess it depends on how much money you start with, if you have saved a reasonable amount then you may not have to work through the terms, but you may need to top up during the summer.

I worked some summers, some I did not. I got the minimum loan and no bursary or anything. Just lived off contributions from my father and my overdraft.

Nope, never worked. 3rd year.

Only student 'loan' I get is around £50 a month. :\

Quite lucky my parents can afford to put me and my brother through uni at the same time.

I only know a few people who didn't work during university. They were generally broke but always seemed to enjoy themselves. Out of the 3 years I was out of work for about about a year (beginning of 2nd year/halfway to end of 3rd year) During those times I kept my eyes on finances a lot more than when I was working.

It's not impossible to live solely on the loans and grants but it's not easy either especially when factoring in rent/bills etc. The best advice would be to get a part time job over weekends, if you can.

I'm 4 months in and haven't got a job yet, but I have to get one to cover rent in the 3rd term. My savings from working the previous 6 months have covered the rent and living so far, and I have just about enough to cover until the end of January.

I worked during my first year as i had a lot of outgoings including car insurance, and rediculously expensive phone contract.

I am not working this year as i dont have no much out goings, will be working next year though as its my placement year!

I used to work whilst at uni. Sure, it's supposed to be a time for fun, but working meant I was able to take up hobbies such as skydiving, riding motorbikes and own a car, as well as go on holidays.

You can have time and work too. 3 months summer holidays meant you could earn some decent money and still have a good 4 week holiday.

Student loan helped a lot, but not for the level of lifestyle I wanted. :) Furthermore I claimed independence from my parents as uni was my thing, they had paid for my education up to then.

I dont work, but then thats because my dad died.. I receive his pension each month while I'm in full time education, so that keeps me afloat. It is not possible just on a loan.

It also helps to think about the debts you'll incur over uni. Having a job meant I came out uni without an overdraft to pay off and I didn't apply for a maintenance loan in my first year so that brought the level of debt I owe down.

As others have said you can work and still have a good time. I did and weekends were generally dead around uni anyway.

Nope didn't have any jobs during term time at Uni. I did have summer jobs though.

I lived off my grants and then also a small amount each month from my family but this wasn't 'essential' to get me through but made things more comfortable.

Cost of books etc is quite steep so best to put some money adie at the end of each summer for these.

I had a friend that worked at the SU. I don't think working spoils the experience tbh you spend a lot of time doing sweet F A anyway!
