Anybody NOT work whilst at university?

For those of you who worked only over the holidays, what sort of work did you do that let you only work in the holidays?

Garden centres, retail, student union stuff. To name a few. I worked at a garden centre and they always let me come back on 2 weeks notice.

Did temping work in the summer and then buggered off for three weeks on the continent before going back.

I didn't work through my first 4 years, with the exception of a Summer job for the Edinburgh festival in the Summer after first year, as my parents were mostly able to help me out, plus a sizeable loan/grant. However, I'm now back doing an exam only year, and having to work part time as I'm not eligible for either a student loan or JSA (not enough of a student for one, too much for the other), and my father passed away earlier this year, so my family can't afford to continue the support.

I'm actually off to start my first shift in an hour. Bit scared having been out of work so long, really :p

I didnt work at all during or out of term time. Didnt get any funding from parents either. I was just sensible with my student loan. Its not that I was opposed to getting a job I just managed ok without the extra income. I did get the full loan and not have to pay tuition fees though.

I work throughout the summer, not because i need the money, but i did it because 1, summer is a long time to be doing naff all, 2, it looks good on my cv that i haven't just been doing naff all and that i am re-employed by the same people very year shows i'm not a noob, 3, the extra money i do bring in means if i want to go out an extra night at uni i can, and i don't have to get the value food from tesco etc.

With the max loan and summer work i don't have to take money from my parents which means if i bugger up i only have to feel sorry for myself.

First summer I worked at a restaurant/pub. Second summer I temped for the NHS which was much better paid considering! Deffinatley get yourself signed upto a decent temp agency. Preferably at Easter or before you get back for summer so that you're top of the pile.

I should add I did an internship inbetween my second and third year for 12 months which helped pay my way with the little I managed to save :)

I dont work, dont get money from parents and have no savings. Dont really have time to work with the course im doing. I manage to live off the £3600 loan, though share a room because it saves money. It is possible ,just takes careful budgeting. Blowing £50 on a night really messes things up, thats a months food for me. Saying that im deep into my overdraft but thats because of the amount i spend on scuba diving.

I can survive very comfortably on my means tested loan, and its less this year than last year.
I worked last summer though to buy this PC.

If your careful the loan is more than adequate. For instance, my rental accommodation is only £40/week, looking at going up to a £47 a week house next year as it has en-suites and the like.
Most of my friends went through the university accommodation system and are paying £60 and have mould.

I worked in the summer, washing up every night, managing a campsite every morning/day

Smashed my loan on beer, regret it a little now, but had a great time

Didn't take a car to uni, that would be a huge financial hole

I worked as a dustman over the summers as it was the best paid job I could get and I only had to work for five hours a day. Finished at midday. Then went to the pub.

i worked the summers between the 1st & 2nd year, and 2nd & 3rd, didn't work during term time at all, as i had enough money from my loan/grant.

1st summer job i had was in coop, 2nd in the purple shirt shop (not salesman, just warehouse stuff).

Always worked in the summer and worked part time most of the way through first, second and third year. Normally got a temp job at Christmas and got kept on with a very small contract afterwards. In fourth year I was close to taking a job with M&S again but pulled out the day before my first shift - one of the best decisions I've made.
