Im at uni at the moment and im putting on so much weight lol. Im going to the gym all the time and not really eating that badly, is it just the drink that makes u put on so much weight?
Your thread title makes it sound like it might be unusual to go to uni, there's lots of people here who've been to or are at uni. But the answer is I've been and barely put on any weight during my time there so it's quite possible not to.
stop eating rubbish food. A beer has about 200 calories or something, so yeah they can put on weight if you knock them back.
I bet you are eating more than 1 macdonalds/kfc etc a week, takeaway pizzas, kebabs, subway etc. I ate dominos every day for about a year I put on loads of weight and spent a metric ****ton of money.
Thats the saying i believe for first years average weight increase (in lbs) over their first year (no source to back this up) I put on about 8lbs and went to gym 4-5 days a week in my first.
I lost a lot of weight right before going to uni, and while I was there I kept it off and possibly even lost a little more. Then again, I was experimental. I'm glad I got off the rollercoaster at the right time, but I wouuldn't mind losing the softer bits again.
I actually lost weight because I joined a gym and generally didn't go out drinking much anyway.
But if you are drinking more alcohol than normal and not doing more exercise, then yes, of course you will put on weight, there are a lot of calories in beer/larger.

As far as I'm aware it stems from the American idea of the "freshman 15" which may be the average amount of weight that people on or more likely is just catchier than "freshman weightgain that varies from person to person".
It's a good idea to go to the gym while you're at uni though, it's probably going to be cheaper than you'll get it at any other time in your life, it's good fun and if you're lucky it'll be a reasonably well equipped gym too.
