Anybody with Computing degrees?

I did an Applied Computing degree at Northumbria.

Got to say it was actually a really good course as it allowed me lots of options as to what modules i could do.

I specialised network programming, general networking and web design/programming; but also threw in lots of HCE and design & analysis modules to boot

I graduated back in 2006 with a 2:1 and am now working as a web developer in Cambridge. We have other programmers working for us who started with no experience (non IT related degrees). They can now 'write' code, but they never bother to pick up books so their theory is lacking and they rarely choose the optimal solutions to problems.

UWE was OK when I was there (graduated in '96)

I think the general consensus is that you shouldn't go for an out-and-out comp sci. degree if you're not going to go to one of the well-known "centres of excellence" for comp sci.

UWE for example had an amazing course (Systems Analysis) which still manages to be relevant to my work. It was very light on the programming side, so if you weren't a coder to begin with, you weren't one at the end. But what it did was redress the balance of coders vs analysts. So a coder attending the course would end up with a lot of analytical and business skills, and likewise an economics student would end up with some coding experience, plus an appreciation for software development.

erm, yeah, advice, if you're going for those institutions, go for an IT/Business mix course.

Computer Science at Exeter.

Great course, great university, great campus. A little too many hills, but keeps you fit!

Did my three years and after graduation got onto the HP graduate scheme, where I still work as an HP Technology Consultant for the Microsoft Infrastructure Practice. I specialise in Client and Server virtualisation and remote desktop protocols.

I haven't used any of the knowledge that I learned on my course in my career apart from a bit of web programming.

I did a BEng in Computer Networking, i dont really think my degree helped much with my first couple of jobs but as you move up in IT i think they expect you to hold a degree, all i can say is to do a degree in a subject you like and you should be ok.

Artificial Intelligence with Computer Science at B'ham, currently working as a senior developer in a web agency (but a lot of what I learnt, Human Computer Interaction, Prolog (for NLP) etc., comes in useful on a regular basis).

I did comp science and most of the jobs for graduates in IT here at the moment all state computing science/software eng as requirement. Other mickey mouse IT degrees aren't worth too much really. And yes, comp sci was the most boring years of my life!

Computer Science at Cardiff Uni ('97-'00...jesus time flies).

Most of what I did DB/Programming wise was useful employment-wise for the first 2-3 years, moved away from programming thereafter.

UWE isn't much better from what I have heard.
Computer Systems Engineering from UWE, best course if you want to go into real programming and not it support. Though they changed the course name, but the content should be the sameish.
