Interesting thread on another forum that I'm following. I've been flashed by a Gatso style speed camera, luckily nothing came through, but I've never been got by an average speed check. I don't actually know anyone who has either. Anyone? Or, donning the tin hat, are we thinking they're an elaborate hoax to make us slow down?

As per the spirit of the original thread, let's not turn this into an argument over the rights and wrongs of speeding.

ive asked this before on a couple boards. no one knows anyone that has been "done" by specs cameras as far as ive found... friends of friends bosses etc

I saw something on TV yesterday showing someone who'd been caught by one of these. They had a chap in a police car further down the road who's informed if anyone's average speed is crazy, though this fellas was 98 avg, quite impressive. I doubt they're manned the whole time though, and as to whether they can automatically issue a penalty, I don't know.

Yeah guy at work reckoned they were a load of rubbish. 6 points two weeks later after going to and from home ;)

I think they probably have higher speed thresholds... taxi drivers seem to go slightly higher than the average speed but never floor it. Guess they would know best speeding around most of the time :p

2 of my girlfriends colleagues done on the M1 between J25 and J28, averaging 60 in a posted 50.

One thought average meant average speed past each camera, the other was just driving quick!

yeah my boss gone done doing average of 77mph on m1 london end, £60 and 3 points, was very funny :) he evan did the change lane thing pass each one

i've always wonderd how many get caught by these. I always laugh at rep mobiles flying through these zones, then slamming there brakes on for the camera... Do they not know what average means?

They are currently putting these up on the M62 on my way to work. Does anyone know what tolerances they have? Will it be ACPO limit or higher?

I've heard that the threshold for them is higher. If for example they have a threshold of 55, you would have to be doing 58-60 indicated average to get caught due to speedo overread.

I've highlighted the answer in your question.

On the M1, J28 to J25 I follow the trucks at an indicated 55mph and I'm clean to date.

Vehicles I used to drive with tacos showed the taco showing 10% lower than the dash. I don't have a GPS to show what I'm actually driving at, but I'm happy with the gamble :)

I was on the M1, J28 to J25 and I saw the Spec camera flash. I was doing 50mph for most of the way and sped up to about 65mph for a few seconds thinking I was clear of the average speed area.

Do spec cameras flash?

no. spec cameras just read your numberplate, then work out the time it took you to pass through 2 or more cameras. If its higher than the limit + a percentage, it sends a NIP to you.

there is an internet theory that the specs cameras on the motorway arent set a the usual 10 % +1mph limit and are set at something more like 70

never been brave enough to try though !

*edit*

apparently not

If their aim is to slow traffic then they certainly work

Im not sure making people drive dangerously stairing at the speedo and not the road and sitting on each other bumpers was in their initial aim however...

I tend to agree but as rg-tom has found some people cant mange to stay in the same lane at 50 never mind 70 - and in most bits of this Specs stuff theres no barrier so the effects could be catastrophic , so I do back specs, at roadworks. Spec'ing the whol road network is pointless and something only Jacqui Smith could think is a 'good idea'.

Another piece of hear say i heard was that if you changed lanes for each camera, the system isn't bright enough to keep up. I have no idea whether or not that is true though.

it used to be true

then they fixed it.

look at the specs system on the M1 J25-28 now, there arent 3 cameras. The old system used to be 3 cameras, one for each lane, and lane 1 cameras could only take to lane 1 cameras, meaning if you swapped to lane 2, your numberplate would be "lost" and it wouldnt calculate your average speed

some of the posts on the M1 even have 1 camera now, and some have 2. Unless they just cover 2 lanes now and overlap ?

again, wouldnt want to be the one to find out though !
