Anyone bothered with Windows 11 25H2?

They are now offering 25H2 to me but until the localhost issue is fixed:

I think I'll give it a miss.

Since so many dev things rely on localhost, I wonder how that one could have splipped by.

Unless all their testers only ever use Azure for everything?! Maybe it's on purpose then?

that power cable scenario with my foot yesterday
well the only other theory i had other than it being me was that it decided to do a windows update that morning when i was trying to leave the house LOL!

but no im sure it was pebkac lol
other than that which im sure is me i wopuldnt have noticed other than it stopping me being able to leave to take the dog out for a walk for an extra few minutes lol
FFS

"Oh you want to go out do you, how about I force updates on you when you're shutting me down, and corrupt your bootloader if you dare cut the power!"

a friend messaged me earlier asking about hte latest windows update
its managed to somehow spoon gigabyte control so the rgb on his 3060 is now doing whatever it likes from what i gather and it has stopped a few other things from working
but it isnt a straight up setup hes running hes got all sorts of networking and stuff so it will probably have different issues to most people
mine seems fine so far

even better i restarted my pc and my rgb on my gpu is now not working lol
and it wont let me install sapphire trixx
i think this windows update has borked a few things my fan curves are now jammed at max and yeah loads of little things are utterly well spooned
be a fun couple of days trying to sort this one out i bet lol

Mine updated at the weekend and seems to have changed all my default apps like internet browser and what program opens video/text files, bit annoying.

Couldn't update so I did the reinstall using recovery keeping apps, so it updated to 25H2 but left system alone

Although it went from my custom image to a slightly more bloaty "fresh install" one, I used the debloater so at least it's half way there

mine now decides whether the rgb on the gpu [not the rest of the rgb just the gpu] like its a dice roll each time you press the button
this is since late last night when it actually restarted properly after the update a couple of days ago.
its working right at this second well the light is technically on now i cant control it in anyway but they are on at least lol

Thanks for this, wasn't aware. I was going to upgrade my office PC to Windows 11, but holding off for now until this localhost issue is addressed...

Unless there's an option to upgrade to 24H2 instead somehow? I have Windows 11 24H2 on my home PC, though I installed it a couple months ago when I built the PC.

I don't know whether this is 25H2 related or not, but I had a real headache trying to install Windows 11 on my laptop last night, which previously had 22H2 until I'd wiped the drive.

Basically the USB stick that I'd use works on all my UEFI machines, except this one laptop. So I spent the best part of last night trying options in the BIOS, reformatting the drive a few times, none of which worked. What did work however, was formatting the drive to FAT32 and splitting install.wim into 4000 MB chunks, resulting in three install.swm files (install.swm, install2.swm, etc).

I don't know if a previous BIOS update caused that or if it's just a quirk of 25H2 - I personally think it was a BIOS update and it caught up with me. But on the same stick, Windows 10 x64 installer would boot in UEFI mode with Secure Boot enabled - Windows 11 though, just a flat nope!

Could it be the windows update has blocked your fan control/rgb software on account of the winring vulnerability?

Could it be the windows update has blocked your fan control/rgb software on account of the winring vulnerability?

i was thinking that possibly
also its reset all my desktop background its reflipped all my screens the wrong ways [lol!] its changed my log in screens all my colours and themes its reset my frame caps in some games
my rgb was purely done through the sapphire trixx software
sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt lol
theres a few other things its either reset to default or its randomly changed it to something else

im not absolutely sure it is windows update that caused any of these things
BUT the timing was exactly when it updated windows so........... its deffo on the suspect list lol

Of course, the localhost issue is meant to be KB5066835 rather than 25H2.

Work machines have KB5066835 and localhosts still works

We don't test updates and are set to what I would consider an "interesting" (as in the alleged Chinese curse) update policy with little delay between MS and what our policy installs. However, despite this we haven't been offered 25H2 yet.

So maybe there is an interaction between 25H2 and KB5066835, or some other factors.

While we almost universally mock Microsoft for their continuous lack of testing, I suspect that if localhost was universally broken even Microsoft would have noticed.

Windows 11 update knocks out USB mice, keyboards in recovery mode - The Register

Microsoft has confirmed a bug that disables USB mice and keyboards in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) after installing security update KB5066835, released October 14.

The bug affects Windows 11 version 25H2 (2025 Update) users only when accessing WinRE – the diagnostic toolset used to troubleshoot boot failures. USB devices work normally in Windows proper.

WinRE can be accessed when Windows fails to start multiple times, or manually by interrupting the boot process twice (holding the power button before Windows loads). The system automatically enters WinRE on the third startup.

Microsoft said engineers are developing a fix to be released "in the coming days."

This offers little comfort to users already stuck trying to troubleshoot PC problems with nonfunctional input devices.

I wanted to test it on my machines. One of which said it couldn't up date because the version of W11 was too old. (Probably on it 2-3yrs) I had to enable TPM to get it to install on that one. Then do the reg back to get a local account.

On my other desktop machine (I use as a server) it has no TPM so I installed a W11 from a few months back but that also wouldn't update further. After a bit trial and error I used one of the tools to create an install with no TPM and a local account. That worked. But it pops up about a online account now and then. So I wonder if they are retroactively trying to disable local accounts.

Then I installed new nvme on my main laptop so reinstalled 25H. No issues at all. All are using local accounts.

I only did it for the security updates. Didn't need any of the other features. I will say I found a way to get rid of a lot of the clutter in Windows Explorer. Not sure if it was possible in earlier builds. Still duplicates external USB drives. Stupid.
