Anyone considering emigrating?

Every day I think about moving away from the UK.

I’m going to Spain on Saturday for 8 weeks which will give me a taste of what it’s like living there.

Thought about maybe Switzerland just for the mountain passes on my motorbike etc.

Spain is nice, I lived in Valencia for a year with my ex. The outdoors is amazing, but my issue was the lack of suburbs. I either had to live in the sticks rural (which I would have done, but the ex wouldn't as she was from Valencia city) or an apartment in the city, which I refuse to do. I will never live in a city again, did that for nearly 25 years in London.

I spoke to my mate in town I hadn't seen in a good while and he and his other half are teachers. They said that it's just too pricey to live here now and that coupled with the kids that are just completely out of control within modern day schooling in the UK, they have both got contracts to teach in South Africa. Fair play to them I say!

Planning Spain in the next 3 years or so. Got a couple of mates out there already and the Denia area is favourite at the moment.

My parents lived in Denia and Jávea for the best part of the last decade and I’ve spent a lot of time out there, great part of Spain to be in

Where crime rates are crazy and you can get murdered for £5? Sounds like a great swap

Brave move, SA cetainly wouldn't be my first choice as a country to emigrate to. In fact it wouldn't even be on the list.

I went to Australia on working holiday visa in 2006 after spending all my life in Newcastle (other than holidays and the odd week away working). Still here!

Question...do you miss travelling? I guess Asia is kinda close but that is still like 5, 7hrs away?

That is one thing I wonder, it seems to be miles from anywhere.

Absolutely. Miss cheap flights to European destinations. Fiji is 5, Bali 6, Bangkok 9. We often have a short escape to Bali in winter, or Queensland which is hot all year round but its still 3 hours up to Cairns from here.
There is so much to see and do in this country but it's often cheaper going to Thailand or Bali. We usually go back to Europe every 12 to 18 months depending on events or whatever. Pre covid we starting going to Spain to spend a week in a cheap villa on the south coast with my family then jet off to another destination on our own rather than going back to Newcastle. I always fly Emirates so pretty easy to plan destinations around Dubai. Because of the effort it forces you to plan more to get more out of it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing just means a little bit extra unpaid time off work but we don't have kids so makes it much easier.
Going back this Christmas and stopping in Dubai for a couple of days then will go to Amsterdam for NY then Norway to hopefully see the lights. July next year planning on climbing Mont Blanc then take in some stages of the TDF, then to Spain to meet the family.

Do you have no hobbies? Are there no pubs, no restaurants? What excitement do you think the UK would give you that you can't do there, genuinely interested.
Yes to all, but it's not really the point. It's not excitement I'm after. It's culture, being closer to the centre of the world other than being tucked away at the edge of the planet. A flight anywhere international from here is a 12-24 hour mission instead of a 40min hop to the Continent.

We'll probably to an exploratory visit towards the early part of next year to get a feel for the UK again.

Emigrated about 18 years agai and lives in various parts of the US, France and Switzerland. Never looked back, never regretted anything and miss essentially nothing. Well, the odd food/beer or hike in the highlands which i can get a fix with a visit every 3-5 years.

Not that the UK is a bad place. All countries have pros and cons, but so many countries can offer a more. Some combination (but not all) of Better quality of life, better weather, better good, safer, cleaner, higher income, better working rights, better services.

What i love about Switzerland is i earn more, keep more of my money, but the service and infrastructure is leagues ahead of the UK. It is centrally located, so i can make a day trip Italy or France, ski many of the worlds best ski areas within a few hours drive. And everything just works.

Unfortunately the trajectory of the UK looks very grim. Tories are utterly destroying it and their control over the media means they will always be a threat.

If i was to emigrate anywhere else it would probably be Munich
