Anyone Else a 'Assistant Leader' in the Scouts (Beavers)

Im an occasional helper at my sons Scout group ...my tip ...buy a shot gun or at least a big stick :(, jk I find it enjoyable most of the time but havnt the time or the patience to become a leader.

As someone who has always been in the scouts and now helps out as an occasional helper due to time constraints, I can tell you that is is a very rewarding thing to do.

Obviously everyone in the organisation is doing in voluntarly so they wouldn't do it if they didn't enjoy it.
Not entirely sure how Beavers is run nowadays as its been a while since I was in it and the whole movement has changed significantly in the last 5 years or so so I can't really give much advice unfortunately.

Beavers and Cubs haven't really been impacted by the bigger changes in the movement over the last few years.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

There are not enough rolleyes to reply to that post. Eejits like you are precisely the reason why there is a stigmatism around youth organisations and why we are struggling to get adults to volunteer.

The Scouting movement in particular has some very strict rules on how adults should interact with the children e.g. never should an adult be in a 1-on-1 situation with a youth member.

The reason is they don't check very well. Just some recent dirty deeds

"In April 2011, David Burland, 53 charged with 12 indecent assaults,13 counts of sexual assault, four counts of gross indecency and six of inciting a boy to engage in sexual activity"

2011, 44-year old Steven Etherington
"was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault. He bound the hands and feet of one boy and whipped him with a wet tea towel"

He was the Scout Association child protection officer, in charge of training scout leaders across the Yorkshire district.

Such a safe place to send your kids.

I've got this...

for tonight!! :)

There's always a 'Bad Apple' somewhere!! especially where kids are concerned!!, The Scouts are paying for the DBS and CRB checks! but as I have nothing to hide I was happy for them to do it!!

And I'm certainly NOT a kiddie fiddler!!! That's as despicable as harming a Woman in my books, and deserves some of the most harsh punishments I can think of!...

Unless they're paedophiles.
When i was in the scouts just after joining from beavers one of the things we did was perform the full Monty keep your hat on routine as part of a small show for the leaders and a few parents. We had swimming trunks on under our clothes fortunatly. I look back now and wonder where that idea came from :/

One of the assistant leaders is now married to a family friend and every time i see her that distant memory pops into my head.

You don't need to defend yourself. This stigma is nothing but damaging to young people who need the support of organisations such as the scouts but can't get it because of the chronic shortage of volunteer leaders.

Immensely enjoyable!! :D

First I was a 'Casualty' with a bump on the head getting wrapped up in bandages! then we played a Hoop Rescue Relay game which was knackering!!

Very enjoyable... not giving it up yet!! :D :D :p

All I can remember from the Beavers is we once had a big bonfire and cooked sausages on a wooden skewer. I guess things like that have been banned now?

I'm a volunteer instructor with a youth organisation too with kids from 18-20 (admittedly they stop becoming kids towards the end of their time with us). If properly committed to it, it can be very hard work but the flip side is that the kids benefit from your hard work.
