I was going through the variable speed bit last night and one of the gantry cameras flashed as myself and the car outside me went through. The signs said 50 and i was doing 50 indicated so i can't see that i've been done, but the guy outside me was going only slightly faster if he was going faster at all. It did flash twice.

Are those cameras the ones that do average times and flash you if you've gone too quickly between cameras or do you reckon the camera is just playing up?

All the ones I've seen on the M42 haven't been average speed cameras, just standard ones, though I haven't been up that way for a few weeks.

Also, an interesting point, the cameras aren't on all of the gantries. You can see which ones they are on by looking at the opposite carriageway. You can see the cameras on the backs of the signs as you're coming towards the gantry on the ones that have them.
If you can't see any cameras on the other side of the road then there shouldn't be any on your side either.

I've been driving up and down the M42 most days since they were installed a couple of years ago. Got flashed a week or so ago for the first time doing about 60 in a 50, just waiting to see if I've been caught.

I'm still not 100% convinced they are live though as people were shooting past me and not getting flashed, time will tell I guess.

Thats what i think too. Also i was in my mum's car which is probably not registered in her name yet so even in the unlikely event that it was me that set it off we won't know for a while if at all!

When i had my motorway lesson i saw 6 cars get flashed one after the other on the same stretch so the cameras obviously do go off, but i've never heard of anyone ever being done there.
