This morning this popped through my letter box with 'Strictly confidential and private' over the front of the envelope. It didn't generally seem like spam so I took it seriously and was panicking for about two minutes. Then I realised I hadn't had any work done, or owe any money!

On closer inspection my name only appears in the address. followed by sir/madam

There is no mention of consequence of not paying. They say go to our website and do not offer a particular section of it such as the payment page. They also say to write to the above address.... for what?

Also crucially the phone numbers which they primarily want you to use is different to the real one on this debt collector website. Which I assume is manned by a wily trickster ready to rinse your bank account. E.G. They want you to set up a direct debit over the phone with them in person... hmmmm

Is there any way to alert the authorities to this bank account and have them shut down as someone may fall for this.

I'm tempted to phone them up and play about with them, asking them to confirm details etc or when I should be expecting their heavies to come round.

Well I'm not going to use any of my details....

Tomorrow I will call them, give them a fake name and address and tell them I'm ready to make the repayment they are asking, but not quite sure about the best way of doing this and see what they say.

Might be genuine and meant for a different person with the same name as you?

Looks legit.

My colleague recently got informed that he was bankrupt, much to his surprise. Turns out that it was actually someone else by his name.

Surely you have better things to do with your time?

You can get fake name and credit card generators. People use them to toy with scammers in their youtube videos all the time. However the wise thing to do would be to report the incident to Action Fraud and if you have any dim witted neighbours or elderly residents that may have received the letter also that it's a scam.

How do you know it isn't the real company?

They might have made a mistake or been passed incorrect details or traced the wrong person.

From memory I think this is a genuine firm - have you accrued any dentistry costs over the past few years?

actually looks like it is

https://www.akinika.co.uk/

also a scam firm perhaps wouldn't recommend you speak to citizens advice etc...

though given they've not got your name but have simply addressed the letter as dear sir/madam it might well be aimed at a previous resident

And as I mentioned on the letter they have a different telephone to the one that's on the company website. Think they're using a real company with fake contact details. The only lead would be to track down the bank account they provide and telephone number. Not sure who to report this to.

They used to go under the name "IQor" which was apparently based in Florida, and the person on the phone had an African sounding name.

This has cropped up on Ebay Help AND Paypal too ^

yet the number on the back of the letter matches the one on their website

you're likely overthinking this tbh...
