Anyone else had problems upgrading to new iOS 4.2 then?

So I plugged my iPhone 4 into the laptop today to sync some new music, and a message popped up to upgrade to new 4.2 software, I clicked yes but it said I must sync first (which I was going to do anyway so went ahead and synced). I then proceeded to upgrade to the new OS.

It took some time to download, approx 15-20mins. After downloading finished my iPhone lit up to say it was syncing (with the new update presumably) but after about 30 seconds an error message appeared to say updating could not be completed (I forget the exact message) so I clicked yes and thought I would try again, I then unplugged/replugged the usb cable from the phone.

Although I then received a message in iTunes saying it has detected my phone in recovery mode and I must restore it before it can be used.. I am already now angry at this point so I click the restore button, to be greeted by another message saying the below



Obviously I am now very concerned that if I go ahead and restore I will lose all my texts, pictures, videos, apps and settings etc? Am I being too paranoid and has a backup been taking and everything will be restored back to normal, and can I trust the last bit of the message which says I can restore everything?

I am abit of an iTunes noob, I can see where all my music is backed up to from my sync, but cannot see if and where any pictures etc have been backed up to? Would be very annoyed if I lost all my apps aswell.

So has anybody else suffered this fate from this or any previous updates? And does anybody know a way I can get out of this situation, whilst having my phone back like nothing has happened? If so should I try to update to the 4.2 again or leave it..?
 
Words cannot describe how angry I am right now, predominately at Apple.

I obviously synced my phone but did not realise at the time this does not back up photos and apps etc. I will now be backing up everything regularily (partly my fault I didnt anyway) because I can no longer trust Apple with their pathethic and buggy software updates, which seems to be a major problem after my extensive googling session for a resolution this evening.

My main gripe was there was no recommendation to backup my photos etc before the update, only a sync which this does not do. Can't be hard can it Apple to warn the less savvy users of your products of this?

Anyway long story short, anybody with this problem or with a similiar problem (iphone in recovery mode, with no recent backup, and thinking the only way out is a recovery) try the TinyUmberella software, to 'kick your iphone out of recovery', worked a charm for me and hopefully for others, I gave them a fairly generous paypal donation aswell after. http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/

Yep, exact same thing - had to restore. Furthermore, no matter what I did it gave error while restoring every time. Had to restore via different computer.
 
Just one major issue that has rendered my pad useless until an update arrives.

Wifi bug means that I have to reset network settings multiple times a day, otherwise the pad just either cannot see my network or can't connect to it. Given that the bug has existed on iOS 4.2a and b, and then 'c' which is our final release it alarms me that apple have taken so long to do anything.

You're angry at Apple because you didn't back up your files before doing a major software upgrade? Hmmm.

Anyway it went fine on my iPad but my iPhone is readying from time to time. Looks like a nuke and pave is in order.

Thankfully the Wi-Fi bug for the iPad seems to have gone for me on 4.2
 
I'm having performance issues since going to 4.2 ... on my Iphone 4

just get periods of time - clicking on an icon, opening a folder etc - occasionally where phone just "sits" and waits for a 2nd or two - basically unresponsive

didn't have this problem before
 
Think I'll hold off until the next release. I usually update as and when they're released, but there's nothing in 4.2 that would make me want to deal with the possibility of bugs.

I see you only quoted the first and last line of my post. In that case assuming you either skim read or did not read my entire post I actually acknowledged the fact I should have backed up prior thankyou. However my gripe still stands with Apple as a quick look on google suggests failed updates and the like are very common and many users are suffering this fate.

Whats more Apple recommends you do a sync before the update, which as I also said in my post gives the less savvy user the impression they are indeed backing up their files (in this case photos, movies etc) which they are actually not, there is no warning otherwise.

Its not hard for Apple to script a warning popup asking you to not only sync but to also backup everything else 'just incase their carp software updates fubar your phone again'. I wasn't too impressed with their attitude on the phone either when I rang up for support, 'nah sorry mate all you can do is a restore, you will have to lose everything...'
 
4.2 made my iPhone 4 drop every call made or received, had to take it to Milton Keynes Saturday and got it exchanged, they looked at the call stats and swapped it there and then.... just bad luck on my part I think!
 
This is the problem with software like itunes that gives the impression that it does everything for you- when it goes wrong you're stuffed because you've got no control over whats happening behind the scenes.

That said I thought a sync did retain pictures, texts etc etc. I've done a restore from itunes before when my phone was acting up and it came back exactly as before the restore, i'd not lost anything.
 
I had a similar issue to this when I upgraded my older iPhone 3g from iOS 2 to 3 where I lost all my contacts. It's frustrating that these things do happen when they really shouldn't, but we just have to make sure and backup when ever possible.
 
Must admit since upgrading to 4.2 my signal has been nothing short of horrific.

How can I revert back to previous version? :confused:
 
My phone recently started refuseing to boot, couldnt restore...

Only way to fix it was to use redsn0w and Force DFU mode... But then its jailbroken...

Sold it on ebay and got a nice new HTC desire HD
