Anyone else have stuttering in COD4 with a 4850/4870 card?

Well after fixing my GRID problems, I'm currently playing through COD4 again, and it looks lovely at 1920x1200. However I'm getting micropauses and stuttering in the game. I thought it might be the AA but even when disabled it's still occuring.

The game is a fresh install, with just my saved levels copied back across and running v1.7. I was going to install the hotfix for the ATi drivers, but when I was about to install them it said I already had the latest version on. (I'm running the 8.7 beta, so I think the beta may include the hotfix???)

Anyone have any ideas before I format my PC and start again? I'm also getting some random slowdown in GRID which can be annoying at times. :( Card temp does seem to be hot at around 87ºC.

Thanks.

Grr it must be something driver wise. Ok, I'll try blitzing stuff again in safe-mode and try one more time. If not, it's bye bye Vista install and I'll start a fresh. :(

Try this...

load up the MP game - go to create server and create a local server on the map overgrown... spawn in with auto team - look at your fps then try sprinting forward.

If the framerate drops dramatically when moving and then snaps back to high fps again the moment you stop moving then its a known, tho fairly rare, problem. If it is this problem then no amount of reinstalling windows, drivers, etc. will solve it.

Hey Firegod,

Did you play this first in Windows XP with no issue? Or was it always in Vista?

I haven't tested the 8.7 Cat betas but have had no issue with the 8.6 Hotfix drivers, complete list here

Sounds like the Powerplay issues that plagued the 3 series cards.

Some people ran fine and others it stuttered and paused as Powerplay ramped the speeds up and down in game.

I used to get it with a 3870X2 and COD4 before i sold the card on

Maybe ram related? - you have 2gb, and the two posters that said they had no probs both have 4gb, I remember BF2 needed 2gb to run well back in the day

Thanks for all the help and things to try. I shall try them tomorrow and let you know what happens.

But with regards to Big.Wayne's question....

I used to play it in XP and Vista on my old GTS card fine. I then switched to the 4870 (still in Vista) and now have this problem (even after re-installing the game). :(

Will get back tomorrow with some later findings. Cheers peeps!

On a 4850 @ 1920x1200 with 4 x AA ingame and all the other settings maxed out I get some microstuttering when there is a lot of action onscreen at once with smoke + fire so this is understandable as if I remove the AA it goes away. These cards are amazing but there are always some games they cannot handle 100% smooth all of the time.

This sounds like something I had with my 3870 and Vista.

I thought it was the card but it was actually a Power Option for the Hard Drive.

If you go to Power Options, Advanced Settings and then go to Hard Drive, make sure it's set to never. That fixed it for me and it was driving me completely crazy.

Give it a try :)

Whilst it might have worked for you, it doesn't seem likely with the hdd issue. I doubt the hdd would have time to sleep during a game like COD4...

I had this issue whilst running cats 8.5 & 8.6 and my 3870 X2.
It was unbearable, the screen / gamplay would "stutter" then resume, too late more often than not as I would be dead when it resumed.
I updated the Direct X (06 June 2008 release) and all is well again.
Not saying this will cure your problem, but its how I got through mine.

I got stuttering on occasion (normally down to loading of some sort I believe) on COD4 with my 3870. Happened on the sniper level mainly I think.

yes...I had it...still have it I guess....and it seems worse at the start of loading a map...like tha mapp is struggling to load into memory for a bit. Then it get beter.....but I didnt have this with an 8800GTX.
I did bring it up in another thread thinking that it was a 'lack of memory issue' with having only 512Mb and playing at 1920x1200...with AA and AF. I have Vista with 4Gb RAM.

I also noticed that 'enabling' multi GPU cards in the options menu would boost the game playing greatly...even though you are using one video card????? This didnt stop the stuttering.

yep it's wierd that dual videocard option.

When I had my 8800GTX I always had to turn that option on, even though I had the single card, to get a smooth gameplay experience. It would stutter like crazy without it.

Since going to the ATI 4870 I dont need to turn dual videocards on anymore to get smooth gameplay.

A very strange one indeed, it was the same with COD2 iirc.
