Anyone else having a hard time getting a job for the summer?

Sorry, didn't realise I gave 2 different figures :o

3x12hr shifts, holidays paid weekly (as I assume the agency are as well), 1 week contract. The agency workers come in as and when and can be phoned a couple of hours before they need them, I'm given a working weeks notice.

Ah, that changes the comparison...£9.16 an hour then.

Yeah go to an agency. I started on an ongoing temp. role with a recruitment agency and now work in the Bank as permanment staff directly with them.

Get paid £8.25 an hour and it's a pretty easy job as well. Too bad i'll be leaving it in August, after 2 years of it.

I hit the recruitment agencies today and came out with nothing. Left my CV with 5 different agencies... am always applying on www.reed.co.uk

really should have got an internship as next year is my final year at uni :/

quite a few of my mates are making big bucks this summer on internships, whereas i dont even have any good experience

Yep, as title says. I have been to every suitable shop in the local shopping centre, and as of yet no luck. I have an application form from Greggs which I'm going to send off tomorrow, but that's about it.

I was going to look into possibly doing bar work...not sure though.

bar works fun :)

I have a job at tesco, now i work 3 days a week, which i do about 16 hours in a week, but since uni has finished i've been begging for overtime normally it would not be a problem during easter and christmas time etc, but up to now there is none something about being overbudget of all things :(. I am considering getting a second job.

:( If you're going to agencies, try not to mention the fact that you are a student. All the ones round here turn you away as soon as you mention this

Temping agencies are the way to go I signed on with an agency a have a job for the summer. I mentioned that I was a student and still got it, they even sorted out the tax form for me so I don't get income tax deducted. There is nothing wrong with agencies, agencies dealing with bigger companies genrally have dedicated staff who work at the company who deal with everything.

If you happen to live in the Midlands then Unitemps might be a start, they email you daily with job offers, some are just one-off like a concert attendant or dancing around for three (you'll know if you saw it in the bullring) and others are longer contracts.

The agency that get people jobs round here is crap.Rathbones or something,50 quid a week for pretty much 9-4.30 5 days a week

I work tons of overtime right now and i dont think my manager wants to hire people. Guy phoned up and asked if we had any jobs,i ask the manager,he tells me to tell him no...even though we are really understaffed. Thinks its easier to get the staff to do lots of overtime rather than employ someone for a busy time and then be stuck with them at the end when you dont need them.

I signed up with reed and got a job at Barclays as soon as my references came through. Its about £7 an hour 35 hours a week + overtime if you want it. Getting paid weekly is great and only having to give one days notice might come in handy. Would definately recommend it.

Sorry to sound like a fool, but can someone explain how these agencies work - especially this "Reed"?

It seems that I have had them all wrong, I thought agencies only did labour/warehouse type of work - mostly for migrant workers. :o

My 16 year old is getting really frustrated now finding a summer job. She has easily sent out over 100 CV's and attended about 20 interviews. What's upset her the most is that some of her thick mates are getting jobs when she isn't. One of her mates who has got no personality and a typical blonde has been offered 5 jobs going to the same interviews as my daughter.
We're beginning to think that she's got way too much on her CV and its putting prospective employers off.
Do you think its a good idea that when they ring her to let her down that she asks where she went wrong in the interview?

Exactly. I rang one up I used before, they said fine come on down to fill in some forms. Filled them in and everything was fine even when I said I only wanted temp work until October. Problem was, I then said something about looking forward to going back to Uni and she went ... ah, we aren't taking students on as there aren't enough jobs... hang on, but there were a minute ago before I said I was a student?!

Crazy. In the end, I got a call on my walk home asking if I wanted a job at my old employers gaff. So I agreed.

Never ever mention you are a student. Just say you are availiable from end of july or something and want full time work. They will find you something easily.... work as normal and when its time to leave just leave and say you dont want the job anymore.

The agency will be annoyed and you may find you wont be able to use them again but thats fair enough. :D

I've been lookin for a job but kind of half heartedly, someone suggested an agency to me but as yet have found absolutely nothin that even sounds like an agency and I wasnt lookin half heartedly then.

Does anyone know any specifics about an agency in Manchester?

Would be a great help if you could.

On a separate note, my dad (solicitor) said that he knew for a fact that can you register with the local police station and be on an identity parade for like 15 quid an hour. I looked for that as well but couldnt find anythin, does anyone know anythin about that either?

Cheers

Problem is, it doesn't take an hour and you'll only be called up now and again, so you'll get hardly anything I bet.
