Anyone else here have a problem with flying?

Never been scared of flying, I quite enjoy it.
I got travel sick twice to and from cyprus and wanted to top myself on the plane but I have a patch which prevents this now.
Wierd how I got chronic travel sickness all of a sudden.

I hate it, can feel it every time the plane goes up or down even slightly. Gets worse in in turbulence as I can't relax at all because always expecting the next bump. Landing is my favourite part because it means the torture is over.

Haven't let it stop me flying though.

Even had the oxygen masks drop down on the way back from Brussels a few weeks ago, I still don't mind. (Yes it was a real emergency- cabin depressurisation), but we landed OK.

How did you cope in that situation? What was going through your head?

Landing is my favourite part because it means the torture is over.

Me too. I love the final part of the descent, landing, seeing the flaps go up and feeling the plane brake. Best part of the whole thing.

I didn't untill I foolishy watched every single season of 'Air Crash Investigation':(

I love that program some useful hints & tips, just in case.

Also love flying, no problems what so ever, it's the crashing I have a problem with ;)

Lets face it if the plane crashes, your dead, simple. If you survive you are very very lucky and time to buy a Lottery Ticket.

But statistically you are more likely to die in a Car/Train crash on the way to the Airport than from the Plane crashing.

It's the Airports I hate, queue here, wait there, check this..... it just takes ages and ages to get to the Plane in the first place. That IMHO is the most stressful part of Flying these days.

I guess, but not before you loose all your clothes and the bolts on the seats shear off and amputate everyone's legs below the shins. :(

I love everything about flying. The take-off, landing, clouds. Airports are normally quite interesting buildings too. It still feels special to me to be able to get half-way around the globe in a day. I really enjoy turbulence too - when landing in geneva once it was like a rollercoaster and everyone cheered when we landed! :)

If you don't enjoy flying then I would guess not sitting next to the window would be a good idea and put headphones on and listen to music/watch a relaxing film (die hard 2 etc :))

Oh, why not? On my last flight to the USA it really helped.

I have considered the course and may look into doing one depending on how bad things get. Not too bad, hopefully. I'm trying to isolate the source of my concern and it seems to stem from

a] not understanding how a plane can stay up
b] worrying about strange noises the plane makes which may mean a vital part has failed [possibly ridiculous, but there you go]
c] turbulence and the plane losing control
d] any other cause of power/engine failure

I know that a lot of these are daft - and probably perfectly common as well. But they seem to be the main things I get worried about.

I can talk to you about all of these if you want, and explain anything you want clarified. Add me to msn if you want. Just about to head off to work (off to Bristol, Manchester and then Newcastle!) so won't be on it until later this evening or tomorrow.

What time would you be on this evening? I won't really have a chance tomorrow, unfortunately. Thank you so much for the offer.

The only problem I have with flying is the ridiculous manner in which most passengers are treated in British airports, the notion of budget airlines that end up charging you twelve different surcharges, and and industry that keeps adding more fuel charges, despite having massive tax subsidies from the government.
.

If they didnt do that they wouldn't exist at all, then you would really notice the cost of flying anywhere rocket. I prefer the various charges I can save money by not taking options.

Doesn't bother me- I fly all the time though, and have had my fair share of stormy conditions... Even had the oxygen masks drop down on the way back from Brussels a few weeks ago, I still don't mind. (Yes it was a real emergency- cabin depressurisation), but we landed OK...

Mind telling me who that was with, I heard of a flight recently that had masks deploy due to pilot finger trouble, that they then cover up by saying they had a depressurisation issue.

I hate flying the way I get through it is by playing on something like a DS with headphones in and the sound whacked up. Its not just the flying it's the people that irritate me.

Especially the ones that always fly in football shirts as if the sunburn, chav tattoo's and trackie bottoms dont give away your english.

I feel a bit odd for making this thread but at the same time I want to share. For years I never had any problems with getting in a plane....

I've been in almost the same situation. I used to fly all over Europe and it was just like getting on a bus for me. However, about three years ago I had a couple of horrible flights in succession and I just developed the fear, almost overnight.

I'm getting better again now and although I don't particularly enjoy it I don't dread it like I used to. The only thing that causes me problems is if my wife keeps asking me if I'm alright; if I just treat flying as nothing special, like getting in a lift or on a train, then I'm fine.

I guess it's just a case of getting back on the horse.

I feel a bit odd for making this thread but at the same time I want to share. For years I never had any problems with getting in a plane and went to various countries - Italy, France, Spain, Poland, USA etc with no problems at all. Then in 2005, after regular travel to and back from Holland, I started to gradually develop a fear of flying to the point where I was taking the ferry to places rather than a plane [which takes a LOT longer].

Since then I have been on planes once or twice - to Holland again, and back over to the USA - but I don't find it enjoyable at all. I'm off to Portugal tomorrow and wondered if anyone here had tips for getting through the flight.

Meditation and relaxation techniques. I have an irrational fear of flying and get panic attacks but by using these techniques I can get through the flights. On longer flight it tends to pass after the first hour or so, unless the flight hits turbulence or something.:(

I see no problem with that, I don't see why air travel should be a service available to all and sundry. It is not cheap to provide an air travel service, and the tax payers should not have to subsidise is so that people can go on holiday.

I love flying in planes, take off is the best part :D

As has been stated, why worry when you're in the air...at least itll be a painless death ;)

The flight was Brussels to Bristol flight, sometime in May with Brussels Airlines.

Who was the incident with dannyjo?

Because you dont know the finances involved. Easyjet make £4 a seat currently. £400 to £500 profit per flight. EasyJet are not a small carrier they will have over 200 hundred aircraft shortly and losing the fuel subsidy would finish them and every low cost carrier around out.

Quite a few of the big boys would struggle as well or atleast stop short haul flights.

Your looking at it from a holiday point of view, a large number of businesses use those carriers as well. A vast number of countries econimies would suffer if a holiday or business fligt shorthaul had to go up to £300 or more per seat.

Not a Belgian airline.

I dont wanna say on here, but another pilot was hailed a hero for hitting ditching and still bringing the aircraft home despite him pushing the wrong button. Another nearly decked one going into gatwick very recently after slowing the aircraft with spoilers he went to stow them and retracted the flaps/slats instead. Imagine losing all that lift at such a low airspeed.

Yep your perfectly safe ;)
