Anyone else here have a problem with flying?

The worst bit of any flight is when you finish climbing and the pilot throttles back, suddenly the engines become very quiet! Everytime I think we've lost power and were just going to drop out of the sky..

I only fly with National/European airlines. I won't fly with EasyJet etc because I wonder about maintenance. If you really want to die russian, african, chinese airlines are the way to go..

It all depends whether you're going internally or not, Aeroflot internationally are actually pretty good. I won't go into russian interior airlines though as that's a different story.

I had a terrible fear of flying - funny noises I didn't recognise, lack of control, not "understanding how the plane stays up", etc, etc.

Most people would have gone on a course or consulted a forum.... I took flying lessons.

When you're climbing out of Shoreham very very slowly in a 1969 (yes, I mean the year) single engined plane on which many of the guages and dials are "unserviceable" and the "instructor" is even younger and nerdier than you are it makes a Boeing 737 seem like the safest thing in the world. Of course it is - you have only to look at the accident records.

Genuinely worked for me :). Once you've flown the plane yourself the idea of flying through the air in a metal tube seems far less ludicrous. It's more of a subconscious thing.

All of the noises you hear (flaps, gear, etc) are perfectly normal including the occasional clunk/bang. Shortly after takeoff you'll hear and feel a reduction in power - again absolutely normal.

Slightly OT... I was on a flight from Malaga back to Gatwick a few years ago and the landing was quite rough (big crosswind). All of a sudden a young girl who had just lit a cigarette (!) 2 rows from me shouted at the top of her voice...

"We're all gonna dieeeeee!!!!!!"

And half the people on the plane screamed with her. It amused me but the cabin crew were less happy. I remember threats that the police would be called, although possibly more because of the cigarette.

I had a fear of heights - I did 6 parachute jumps.
I had a fear of snakes - I had 3 corn snakes
I had a fear of big spiders - I had 2 tarantulas.

Tis the best way.

I swore when I was young I would never do it again after going to Sweden.

And for the next 11 years I did, but one day after a day of riding every single coaster at Alton Towers, I realised how daft I was being, I could ride Nemesis/Air but not get on a plane.. my parents went to the Carribean, Furta Ventura and a couple of other places without me..

I then realised after doing the flight to the USA, how silly I was being..

But you was being silly.
There is no way you can die by riding Nemesis/Air unless you've got a dicky ticker.

Well actually that could be wrong.
Anybody got any figures on the chances of dying in a plane compared to dying on a fairground ride?

This was a scary one I was on 2 weeks ago in Egypt :

ATR 42/72?

I wouldn't because women are better drivers.
Men would crash the plane and kill you where women would just drive it into the steps.

what if something technical happens thant she doesnt understand? did you think of that?

have you seen women on computers?

A 4 engined ATR? I'd love to see one of those.

It looks more like a Dash 7 or some sort of Antonov.

You're right.
Looking at the pics again I'd say it was a Dash 7.
I remember it was a 50 seater, the steps were at the back, the 2 front rows were facing each other with 3 seats each while the others were 2 seats.
The escape door was by the front 2 rows.

Personally, i'm far more scared of planefood and the smell of it then actual flying :o

That stuff makes me feel sick, and to think i used to eat it

Yeah our crew room gets full of the stuff on a night shift as the aircraft start returning. Whats really ***** is some of the guys take the sandwich's etc home for family pack up.

Personally I wouldn't insult my mrs by bringing it home for her to eat, I certainly dont drink the water on an aircraft unless it's bottled.

I like flying, on aeroplanes, in my dreams, whatever! it's all awesome!

The 2nd time I flew on a plane I had the barfles afterwards, back then I had travel sickness often but after a few years enjoy it!

ok

ive been on an atr 72 in vietnam and it was scarry. the plane need repairing. overhead reading lights didn't work and the general state of the cabin was bad, like a museum piece.

i was bricking it. the takeoff in a prop is so different , they just dont have the power that jets do, the plane dips as you takeoff , you feel your stomach drop. thats my experience of one anyway. also turning requires quite steeping banking!
