Anyone else play their favourite game(s) after buying a bad one?

(a 'bad' game is personal opinion obviously)

Last night I bought the new Deus Ex MD as I figured Id give it a try, after a couple hours in I think I have reached the point of no return as its not for me unfortunately. Why? I found the pace quite slow, weapons feel like potato guns, the 'takedowns' lack spectacle and its performance on my rig is pretty bad.

Disgruntled, I browsed my Steam library and came across Crysis 2 that I patched a long time ago with the Maldohd 4.0 mod and clicked play....Hours later I have had a right blast replaying this game and it looks awesome. I can max this game out with the mod and still hit high fps, hell I had to turn a load of settings off or down in Deus Ex for it to run moderately smooth.

This isnt a thread hating on the new Deus Ex as Im sure its the best thing since sliced bread for many but does anyone else always return to one of the their favourite games once in a while, especially after buying a dud? A game that always stands the test of time and ticks every box for you?

Ive got various categories in my Steam library for all my games ranging from 'Absolute ****' to 'Best games' but I have one top 'Ultimate' category for these games including Crysis 2. Its amazing how out of 287 games, only 17 are in my Ultimate category.

Got ARK because of how awful Stomping Land was. Not my favorite game but definately my most ever played at 1.4k hours.

Also got into Resident Evil because Silent Hill was too scary for me as a pup and I was told they're similar, and love that series. That doesn't quite fit the thread topic but it's a similar situation.

Although I'm not all that much of a Crysis fan, playing C2 with the above mod is very good fun. I've played it through several times along with the quality mod, and aside from the odd relatively minor bug, a solid gaming experience was had.

After all these years, I still haven't tried modding Crysis. Must get around to that.

It appears to be my new tactic since going ultrawide as the 3440*1440 resolution has given existing titles a new lease of life. I've started holding off on new titles until I see decent reviews, and by then they're usually half the launch price too. A good example is Batman AC & AO. At launch they had issues but running them now they play and look fantastic, especially at 3440*1440.

Two games on my radar were Deus-Ex and Inside. I've bought Inside as it keeps cropping up in the "Last game you completed" thread, with everyone giving excellent reviews (and it's justified IMO). As for Deus-Ex, it looks like one for the Steam sales, if at all. In the past I would have bought on launch day as it was one I was really looking forward to.

Incidently, I just recently put my system under a custom loop and was testing temperatures as you do. I wasn't short of choice to test the gpus (2*980ti) but my 5930k barely breaks a sweat with any game... Until I decided to replay Crysis 3 and got to the jungle section. It looks fantastic in ultrawide, plays smooth as butter with SLI and it puts the hex core right through it's paces! It's still the #1 game for stress testing a system and it's also brilliant to play through.

Crysis 3 must have been unplayable at ultra settings when it was first released, so it kinda proves the point that some games appear broken at first but are actually just pushing boundaries. Everyone will have a few gems in the library that are well worth a replay with "future" hardware.

I've done it before - not intentionally - been disappointed with a new game and gone back to an old favourite I've not touched in awhile and been surprised how much replayability I got out of it. Ironically in a couple of cases being the original DX (completed the game about 7 times with enough unique stuff and/or time passed that it was interesting each time).

While this isn't a thread about the new DX I've been quite disappointed with that - gunplay is really meh, lots of other complications that aren't really needed and while it looks reasonable the performance hit is quite high for that level of graphics and certainly not as amazing as I'd have expected from the kind of framerate.
