Anyone else really fed up at the moment?

Hah, I know the feeling of being fed up matey! Been out of work since October myself..Driving me mad now.

A mate of mine is also struggling to find work after graduating. He managed to find a temp job after actually going round the local industrial estates and asking people face to face if they needed anyone.

PK!

I'm OK actually, I'm in a job where I know I won't get sacked off due to the recession, so i've got a certain future there.

Hopefully will be getting a pay rise soon aswell!

I had the recruiter on Linked.com (like facebook but more formal) and I have applied for a position on the company website via their application system. Do you think it's fine to follow it up on the linked.com?

When it comes to following up applications, what's the worst that can happen? Granted, if you're contacting them daily, then they'll write STALKER in big red letters accross your application, but phoning to confirm an application has been received, and maybe trying to get a little extra info through casual chat (e.g. have you had many applications, when are they looking to get someone on board, how many people are they looking to interview) can surely only be seen as a way of bringing your name and your application to their attention.

I Left college in Jan 08, and was unemployed till october. If it wasn't from my Mate recommending me to his boss i would still be looking for work.

I feel sorry for you lot that are trying hard, And i wish you luck.

Im a believer in " Its Not what you know, Its who you know ".

As Family, and Friends etc. You never know.

I know its harsh, but this thread has actually perked my up a little. My employer is tightening up on expenses, my own business is slowing slightly, times are not as good as they were 6 months ago.

However, in a weird way its good to hear of people in the same boat :-|

you mean make yourself feel a little eased up because everyone else are suffering with you :p

Thanks for the feedback. Gave me courage to contact the recruit manager tonight.

A lot of people pushed me to use the speculative result when I was looking for a job - but its very rare for it to work... most places don't even accept them as someone said above - only ever got one semi* positive result from that in that the company phoned me back and said "it might be worth to get in contact with their agency" the rest pretty much ignored me out of hand.

Even before the recession it was pretty tough - I was getting more interview requests than I could fit in and still not getting a job - in most cases where they bothered to get back to me (or I got in contact) they said they were really impressed but were able to pick and choose exactly the person they wanted for the job. I ended up having to move out of the area I was living in to find work.

* was actually offered a job but salary was below my basic living costs, once rent and bills were covered I wouldn't even have had money for food.

Rroff - the success of a speculative approach varies with industries. For example, I.T. can be one where it's less effective. As far as companies not taking spec letters, I'm afraid recruitment agencies are to blame for that one, and I'd bet it was an I.T. company that said 'no' to a spec letter/email. IT recruitment is notorious for being one that is especially aggressive and all about the numbers. "You throw enough mud, and some will stick" approach. In this case, they bombard companies with CV's. Email can be a great tool for recruitment companies. I once had a conversation with the recruitment manager at Sun Microsystems, and they said they were sent over a 100 CV's a day, every day!

Recruitment companies will also go fishing with a juicy CV to companies, with a view of getting their foot in the door. They will present a glowing CV of someone with the sort of skills that company are likely to use, stating that this is "just an example of the quality of candidates they have available". I've even known recruitment companies to effectively make up a CV to use as bait. If the company then says they would like to see that client, all they do is say that the individual whose CV they are interested in has just accepted another post, but they have others of the similar calibre. They'll say this even if they haven't, then try to locate one through either advertising the post quickly or trawling sites like Monster, where candidates post their CV's. (There's also other ways!) :D

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention - prior to working in careers guidance and doing redundancy support in companies, I worked in the much more profitable, ruthless and far less moralistic world of high-end recruitment/head hunting. You wouldn't believe some of the tricks I pulled! :)

Yeah I was looking mostly in IT, I finally found employment in retail which seems a little more open to the speculative approach.

Tho again I got my job more from who I knew than what I knew... my brother was already working there (and well respected by management) and some of that rubbed off - I wasn't a complete unknown and everyone else applying was a stranger.

I'm fed up of the this whole "credit crunch" or whatever the new buzzword is :(

Will someone finally fix this mess

I left uni in July and it took me until December to find a job, which hasn't started yet.

Whilst I was looking for fulltime work I was searching for temp stuff as well, but I kept hearing the same thing - that they couldn't promise anything because there are a lot of people willing to do pretty much anything at the moment.

I am signed up to every temp agency in my local area and I have handed my cv in at the supermarkets and local shops, but I always get the same line about high competition for jobs. It isn't just me, 3 of my friends have exactly the same problems. The people I know who have got work recently are all getting it through friends and family (no such luck for me).

The job I have got doesn't start until may (which wasn't made clear until january), and now I am getting very worried about money. At the moment I owe about £2k to the bank, and because I can't afford to pay rent my mum is paying out more than she makes to keep the house going every month. The whole thing is getting me down.

My dad keeps offering to buy me stuff (to fix my car, car insurance) but doesn't seem to understand how depressing it is to be doing busy work all day and that I would rather work for my money.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Im finishin uni in may! so looks like i better start looking for a job now!

I'm fed up currently, thats mainly dissertation related.

I have barely enough time left to complete it.

If I don't come out with a 2.1 I'll look back at these three years for the rest of my life as a complete waste of time and lack of effort.

I know things will change after, I have plans, but this is my first hurdle, and if I can't even manage this, that's pretty pathetic.

Well your first step is logging off here buddy :p

I'd probably have joined the army a while back if we weren't fighting several wars. I don't want to get KIA.
