Anyone else underwhelmed by 4k blu ray disc?

Yes lol, I am aware of aspect ratios. My point is when watching 16:9 4K HDR naturally it's more immersive, everyone raves about IMAX for this reason (I know that's not quite 16:9 buts its far better than 21:9).

You need a bigger TV then, since with 2:35 movies you'll have a smaller image due to the black bars.

55" is pretty small. Also with such a small TV, 4K isn't really showing it's potential.

Yes.

And they are definitely better visually, even my wife can tell the difference.

You can also get this on 4k disks from different regions, same with sound tracks. I think Dredd is available in Dolby Vision on the German disk, but HDR10 on the US disk. Or you get the UK version of Cliffhanger has DV but no Atmos soundtrack compared to the US disk which does but no DV.

There also different "levels" of Dolby Vision. It can be a minimum enhancement layer or a full enhancement layer (MEL or FEL) more on that here.

You can also get hybrids if you know where to where they take the best versions of each and remux it do you have a version with both DV and Atmos which wouldn't exist anywhere else ;)

I dunno, prefer 21:9 for the cinematic experience. I sit closer for movies.

I find there are so many variables. The size of the TV, the type of screen, the viewing conditions, the quality of the transfer and the original material, your blu-ray player, your setting both on the TV and the player, sound is much better if you have an AVR and decent speakers. Almost impossible to pinpoint where an issue or difference might be, but get it all set up right and it is very impressive. As above for films I pull up the sofa and sit right on top of the TV
