Anyone else underwhelmed with OLED?

I saw that the Hisense 55A85HTUK 55" was £400 off with £100 voucher on the rainforest bringing it to £999 so I thought to treat myself.

After setting it all up, disabling all the crap that kills image quality, putting it in FILMMAKER mode which is apparently the most accurate colour reproduction and..... I just can't notice that much of a difference from the old QLED set I was using.

I get that the cheap OLEDs aren't as bright as the newer high end ones but the colours don't pop like I expected them to. The inky blacks are nice compared to the dirty grey with my old set but I just don't see £1000 worth of difference.

I am playing back 4K HDR files that I ripped myself so there are no compression artefacts on an Nvidia Shield TV.

Am I doing something wrong?

Why would you expect colours to pop in filmmaker mode?
If your old TV had accurate colours and this new one has accurate colours there shouldn't be any difference.
Oled is king for contrast.

What your doing wrong is putting it in filmmaker mode if your goal is colour pop.

i have oled on my phone, laptop and watch.

without changing any settings colors pop too much to have any kind of accuracy to real life lol. It is too much.

the screen material can affect it a great deal though, they can have an anti reflection finish that seems to dull a screen compared to a glass like finish.

I don't think I have ever heard of anyone that bought an OLED and was not impressed. That places you in a smaller than small minority yes. Is it possible the Hisense OLED is inferior to the LG ones, or setup poorly out of the box? I don't know. I have an LG 65 OLED...I think it's the CX model I forget. Bought it a couple of years ago. EVeryone loves it and is impressed with it. It's the one piece of tech I've generally just left alone after initial setup and a couple of preference changes. Images just look great for everything with it.

We get the crap Hisense models in the UK unfortunately. I think that is due to change with the new 2023 releases in May but previous models are budget models and not same spec as USA versions. Should have gone for LG/Sony/Panasonic.

If also using filmmaker mode, it can take a week or so for eyes to fully adjust. However, once they do you won't go back to like vibrant or another mode as just looks too bright / unrealistic.

Biggest mistake was dropping a grand on a Hisense.

OLED was a game changer when I upgraded to one, starting with an LG B7. Had another 2 since then.

Colours aren’t always going to pop unless you’re using highly inaccurate settings or watching specific content such as some animated films.

My LG E9 (old oled) is great.... pop's like a goodern, new ones are even brighter (evo panel / heatsink) , wouldnt get a OLED monitor yet.

Display snobs make me laugh. OH EM GEE you actually bought a Hisense lolololooll.... it's an LG panel underneath so I don't see what the problem is.

So I guess I was dumb and didn't understand OLEDs and I had higher expectations than I should have. Good to know.

Not snobbery, just the LG is cheaper and has better processing.

Why do they make you laugh? People that strive for the ultimate accurate picture make you laugh!
While I like the intention behind film maker move, my living room and life doesn't. I make do with movie mode with a brighter overall image.
I want accurate colours though.

It's as simple as if you want an OLED to pop like you see in the shops and all there adverts you need standard or dynamic mode and turn all the fancy stuff back on.

I wasn't asking if my purchase was a good one and if I should have gotten a different TV. If I wanted LG I would have bought LG. It's clear I just had unrealistic expectations.

It's clear to me you had unrealistic expectations of a Hisense OLED. Especially when it dosn't even make use of last years best tec from LG.
If this was a recent purchase from the rainforest, return it for a refund. Then get to Richer Sounds and buy this: https://www.richersounds.com/lg-oled55g26la.html
If a 55" G2 dosn't blow you away and give you enough "pop" for your eyes.................................then frankly, nothing will.
