I have lived in a tower block for the past year , is it just me but does it feel like solitary confinement .

Cramped spaces ,living on top of each other , everyone trying to be quiet to not annoy each other , yet still hearing people moving about when you lie in bed as if you where in the same room

Fully star all swearing.

I'm on the 7th floor, nice big space, and can't hear a thing from our neighbor (surprises me when I open the front door and hear him blasting metal, I always assume he's out, but seems the noise does pass in to the stairwell ).

That said, I think our ceiling is made of balsa wood, definitely a small child up there somewhere.

What’s the difference between a tower block and a block of flats?

I'd call tower blocks those that just have a central cavity and flats arranged around it. Unless we are talking ridiculously big ones they won't have corridors either. They would also have to be somewhat tall.

I imagine a tower to be a little bit taller than an average "block" of flats....

Who or what decides which is which I have no idea... ?!?

Have you seen the tower of flats in Hong Kong? Lol

I lived in a block of flats own by the Hong Kong housing association, basically council flats when I was young. Building has 34 stories tall. Which is average.

Don’t think height has anything to do with it, Sky 100 is a building that has, you guessed it, 100 floors, and it’s private.

They all have lift, all have doors, corridor and fire escape etc like building reg requires.

Whats that absolutely massive block of flats in New York called. It's used in a Sky Atlantic ad. I could never live towards the top of that. Never in a million years!

My sister lived in a tower block, never heard the neighbours at all, concrete floors and walls I suppose, unlike pokey victorian terraced houses they have huge rooms, cheap to heat and no road noise.

The Leftie tosspot powers that be decided that people should not live on top of each other like battery hens [ Americans and Europeans seem to like high rise living ] and demolished 100s of perfectly servicable housing units in central Scotland.

I dont know how it will be possible to solve the housing crisis without more flats being built rather than knocked down. Apartment blocks are fine if done right. I'd have no qualms about living in one.

I live in a tower block here in Salford, there is one plus and at the same time a minus, only one wall has occupants at the other side, and the ceiling, I'm on the second floor all there is below are car parks.

The good thing about this is, I can use my turbo trainer and my bike in the flat without peeing anyone off, but the bad thing is, heat is sucked out like a vampire binging on someone.

I lived in one for 6 months when a student. Was quite high up and had good view of city. Actually quiet enjoyed it, nice double glazing. Was a bit strange though being so close to your neighbours not that you ever saw anyone apart from a few teenage girls who used to hang around the elavator. I think they used to mess with my letterbox as back in those days I wasn't particularly chatty. All in all not too bad had a bit of a community feel about it. Would have no problems living there for a few years.

A bit like the respective heights of John Cleese, and Ronnie Corbett.
Plus a block of flats can be wide, and maybe high, whereas a
tower block is generally narrow but extremely higher.

Personally I'd hate to live in one. No garden, no driveway and you have to pay ever increasing "ground rent" because you don't own the land.

Plus you have to rely on a few 100 other people to not burn the whole place down one day...

I may well be wrong, but in one of the Sky Atlantic promo shots, there is what appears to be a humongous building in the centre, with the Empire State Building to the right, and the Chrysler Building to the left.
I think that the building in the centre is an office block, shot from an incongruous angle, distorting its appearance, but it fades to a close up of a couple of kids looking either at a TV or out of the window, giving it the effect of an apartment block.

I did some googling last night, turns out it is an aprtment block, albeit extremely expensive apartments. It's called 432 Park Avenue https://www.432parkavenue.com/
