Anyone for a Core i7 LAN rig?

Are you running Xfire or sli? It was impossible for me to get decent temps in my V350 so much so i sold it. Im keeping the mobo as its very decent but case was not built for it.

You we're running all that on a single water loop though, on air, it'd probably have cooler temps as all the ehat wasn't being dumped into 1 loop.

My v350 is absolutely fine on a single gpu and dual core (and nb) in 1 loop, and it's ruddy hot in this room!

Mine's on a table with an electric heater underneath. Granted it's "only" got a single 4870, but all I get is an almost inaudible "whoosh" for about a second every half an hour or so.

The V350 is one hell of a case, easily the best SFF case possible.

i've been wanting to build a SFF gaming machine so i can retire my poor HP lappy that seems to want to burst into flames every time i try play a game for more than 3 hours. However i have no clue where to start, or which graphics card would fit into one of these small cases, or water-cooling... :/

Okay, well...

From what i've seen, with the V350, you aren't restricted that much at all. The motherboard need to be microATX, like the one above, and the CPU cooler has a restricted height. But it's not actually that restricted in the V350. For example, I have a Scythe Mini-Ninja in mine, and I get load temps in the low 50's with an overclocked C2D 45nm.

It fits every graphics card with a little wiggling, it'll take a couple of optical drives and a couple of 3.5 or 2.5" HDDs. You also often get 4 DDR2 slots to play with on the Core 2 boards.

Just make sure airflow is good, and you're set to go. It will be more fiddly to fit than a normal case but the V350 comes apart totally so you can get into every corner. Just plan what you're going to do, and take your time.

It's really a doddle. I have no doubt in my mind that a Core i7-965 system with 12GB DDR2 and SLi GTX295s is easily possible. :)

wow that helps a lot :)

dont think i'd be able to afford a i7 system though, more likely to go for the q6600 again but this time with possibly a gtx260 or 280 if it'll fit haha, shame i just missed that massive gtx280 sale :( .

I think we will see more top end matx motherboards this year, because small factors becoming more and more popular.

keep em coming :D and if the price is right i will get matx myself :)

I think i'll stick with my Abit F-I90HD, dual core 775 with a single slot GPU for a LAN gaming box. I mean does anyone really consider quad i7 with dual GTX295s for a dedicated LAN box? Seems to be a bit of a waste to me.

As for additional HDDs in a LAN gaming rig?!? WHY?

Here's my gaming box...

It'll take a longer GPU and two additional HDDs but I don't see the need.

spose peoples gaming rigs are also their main rigs (mine for instance) and I have a soft spot for small pc's :)

I'll defo keep the matx mobo route now, summer ill probably go i7 and stick as much ram as i can in all in my v600 and hopefully water cool it :)

the high end cpu will blitz games and blitz uni work. As to will the gfx (probably stick with my 4870)

Also, everyone likes a challenge.

looks like ocuk have the board on pre-order now guys, but i cant see myself buying it
now. thats just way to much money for a matx board.

what do the rest of you think?

ACK!

Nope, it had to be under £200 for me to consider it. A Ci7 CPU would set me back another two hundred, and DDR3 isn't cheap yet either (although the Crucial kits are a step in the right direction).

Plus then i'd feel obligated to get two graphics cards... :o

Ny next PC is going to be mATX. I asked myself the question what does a full ATX offer me over a mATX. Answer for me was just a bigger box.

So, if nothing changes between now and when i get cash

i7 920
DFI/Asus X58
3x2GB DDR3
Top end Nvidia/ATI
Lian Li V350 silver
1/1.5/2TB hard disk (depends whats on offer in a couple of months)
300GB Raptor from my current rig.
BluRay burner

Seems solid to me.
Question is, PSU and CPU cooler? There does not seem to be a smallish cooler yet for the i7 socket.
