Anyone game at 4K with a 1080?

Realistically can I game at 4K with a 1080 if I drop from ultra to high and drop AA (or down to 2x) in most games? Anyone any experience?

Lets say a game is just too demanding. How does 1080p look on a 4K monitor? Is it as good as on a 1080p monitor? (thinking of the 4to1 ratio).

Can’t comment on a 4K monitor, however I game on 55” 4K TV at 1080p and the games look excellent. I’ve tried 4K gaming just to see if it’s superior graphics wise and have to admit to seeing little difference.

1080p doesn’t look great on 4K screen regardless whether gpu scaling or screen scaling is used. It’s always blurry and never proper 4:1 ratio.
I’m using GTX 1080 on a 4K screen and what I do is create custom resolution like 3200:1800 at which GTX 1080 does ok.
Some games have resolution scaling so you can display at native 4K which will give you 4K menus and hud but drop the scaling to 70-90% depending on the game.
I run Destiny 2 at 90% scaling with high/very high quality settings.

I have a 1070 and am playing at 4k so it should be fine with a 1080 surely.

I'm playing on a TV as well and it looks stunning.

4K at the highest/high presets will only be possibly with 30fps lock for the latest games with a 1080. I gamed on a 1080 up until earlier this month.

Newer games with scaling also helps massively. As someone said above you might have to drop as low as 70%.

The jump in performance required from 1440p to 2160p is just massive. 1070 can do 1440p and the 1080Ti does a decent job at 2160p. The 1080 sits in between but is closer to the 1070.

Destiny 2 is a very well optimised game and 4K is only really possibly with a 1080Ti at 60fps (required for a shooter like Destiny 2).

that's rubbish I can get 60 on a 1080 at 4k in Destiny 2.

60fps lock on Highest? No you can't and I say that from experience.

Don't think it is even possible to get 60fps average.

edit:

As well as Nvidia's own guide, lots of other review sites will confirm.

you said high/highest. I know you can, from experience too.

60FPS is easily achievable if you turn down the right settings on most games.

I'd say you'd have to go to High completely.

Good luck running AC Origins at 4K60 by simply turning down a few settings.

The quality you have to sacrifice to hit 4k60 for newer games is not close to worth it. Anything above SMAA is obviously out of the question.

dont have it.

last graph, 73.5 average, on a 1080 on high :p

Did not the OP ask is it possible if he dropped from ultra to high?

Still not a 60 lock in that chart (but I'll accept the dips can be ignored in most cases). That is completely on High.

Destiny 2 is the best case scenario because it is so well optimised. Take a look at other games like AC Origins.

I would much rather use a resolution scaler than drop things like texture quality.

edit:

Also 4k30 isn't necessarily bad for some games. In which case a gtx 1080 is fine.

Seeing as most games are old then definitely :D

However for modern games, you'll have to make good friends with the high and medium settings. That being said they'll almost certainly still look incredible.

Its also at stock, my card boosts to 2083 and running an 8700.

OK lets look at other new games, Battlefront 2, Forza 7.

On the Samsung 6400KU 49" 4K TV 1440p upscaled looks surprisingly excellent.

It's so good that, as I'm game pad distance away, I seriously question if the hit in performance is worth using native 4k. 1080p upscaled on the set is noticeably lower quality though. Ymmv at monitor distance though with a 4k monitor.

Ultra wide maybe a good alternative to 4k. I have it and games look amazing at 3440x1440 powered by my 1080. I am actually considering a 43" 4k monitor but not with this graphics card, it'll have to be next year's Volta or an amd equivalent. But then it gets very expensive.

Heck I'd argue a 980 Ti can do 4k pretty well once overclocked my 1550mhz and 8.4ghz on the memory for over 400gb/s handled 4k very well.

I agree, the 1070 and 980 Ti are pretty close in comparison and mine plays 4k fine.

I'm not fussy with the FPS though and don't want a constant 60FPS, I think that's where wires are getting crossed. A lot of games I get that anyway with a few tweaks but some are 40-50 and it doesn't bother me one bit lol

i would say more like Medium for 60FPS

owning a 1080Ti and running 4K High on lot of the newer games struggles even with 0AA Creed/Shadow of War (45-60fps) etc...

i got multiple gsync panels i often switch between. currently re using my 4K panel but generally 1440p gets more use due to the high refresh.

I would say forget 4K until high refresh rate.
