Anyone gone from superwide back to 16:9

I'm mulling over the idea of getting a new monitor. Currently I have an LG 34" superwide, its 1080P, 60Hz, non-curved. My original plan was to go for a QHD curved G-Sync/Freesync model, but these don't seem to represent particularly good value for money. You can however get a 32" QHD monitor for considerably less money it would seem. This would mean that I would lose a little bit of width, but gain some height.

I am really only an occasional gamer, and do in fact watch a lot of videos and do a lot of browsing, so perhaps it wouldn't be so bad for me? Anyone done, or doing a similar move?

PS. Can't really consider a 4K TV as even a 40" model would be too big for my (not exactly small) desk, and I feel as though it might be too large even if it did fit.

I wanted a bigger screen and got a 34 ultrawide and was originally on a 27 screen, saw it as a great option as I use racing games a lot and the aspect ratio naturally lends itself to it, but there is one thing I didn't like and was the reason I sold it and went back to a 16:9 screen, a 32 inch 1440p monitor, the screen height is the same as a 27 inch monitor. Didn't feel big enough height wise.

Your use mirrors mine bar the time I put in on the machine working, and I am sure you will enjoy a 32 inch 1440p screen, screen feels bigger and the resolution is a revelation once you have it and the pixel pitch is the same as a 24 1080p screen, which means it looks a lot more razor sharp by default and makes the experience a lot more enjoyable eyeball wise lol, than 1080p.

Gaming will be a bit more demanding than your current screen, with approx. 25% more pixels to drive and I don't know what video card you are using, but there is a win to be had for increasing the resolution as well, AA does not need to be as high as when using 1080p because the pixel pitch makes it look like it has 2x AA already, I run most games with 2x AA whereas on my old 1080p set I ran 4x AA, so it wont be difficult to configure something good I'm sure. If your running something like a 980ti or 1070 or amd equivalent, then that would be ideal.

At the moment there is a special on an AOC 32 inch 1440p, basically it's £200 which is a steal, you could try this out and if you don't like it, you will have at least minimised the expense and get most of the dough back buying at that price.

Thanks @Liquid - some food for thought there. It does sound as though our use cases are quite similar. When I game its generally FPS or driving sims with a wheel. My current GPU is a GTX 970 which might struggle a little but as you say with less AA that would lighten the load. I did spot that monitor for £200 which does seem a good deal, I probably would have preferred a curved screen but I guess you can't have it all, and I guess on a narrower screen it wouldn't be quite as essential.

you can get curved screens but it's going to cost you 3 times as much to get one at 1440p, if you could live with 1080p res at 32 inch size then there are curved screens sub £300.

So many choices lol, good luck, be interesting to see what you choose.

I have to say that I would never go back. Even multiple monitors doesn't compensate for the extra width of an ultra wide. I guess, though, it largely depends what you do with the PC. If you run multiple apps then I would say multi-monitor is a good plan. But if you use apps that benefit from width then ultra is the way to go. I do both so I have multiple monitors and an ultra in the middle. Some games, for example, tend to have a huge amount on onscreen information, so being able to use that extra width to dump all the HUD in to really helps. It's getting close to the time I need to upgrade my monitor and I am not even considering losing the ultra, rather I am just trying to work out where to get the money from for the newer models, lol.

Yeah, must admit I don't mind the monitor I have, just kind of wish it was curved, a bit sharper and with a high refresh rate and some form of syncing technology - makes my monitor sound really lame I know, but it's honestly not bad. Other than that, it has a lovely picture. I'm just struggling to justify the extra expenditure - it might be easier to do this if I used it loads, but I am pretty much just a casual once or twice a week gamer. Perhaps I just need to be happy with what I've got!

I've used many 21:9. I prefer 16:9 for high level FPS play as it is easier to take in the information quickly (and there are no fast-TN 21:9), but prefer 21:9 for more relaxed immersive experiences.

Had an X34A, Did not like 100Hz when I came from 144Hz, I watch a lot of TV shows at my desk and ultra wide is bloody horrible for TV shows because of the black bars, Returned it for a Viewsonic XG2703-GS.

But for movies 2:35 you have no black bars. Whatever you choose, you will always have black bars, either on the side, or top & bottom.

Hi all, I can inject my 2 penny into this conversation. I have had the 40 inch Philips Monitor VA which was superb. I then moved onto the Acer 34 Predator monitor with gsynch which was better for gaming in my opinion. I have now moved onto the Samsung 49 inch monitor ( For gaming I am in complete love with it - Titanfall 2, Battlefront 2, Battlefield 1 soo imersive. I could not go back to 16:9 at all for pc gaming. I have a 65 inch tv for console gaming and its fine as you are farther back etc.

That is pretty insane :D

Anyways, I think I'll stick with my ultrawide. I may go for curved 1440p freesync / gsync when they go under £500, which, looking at the current deals, wont be this year. Oh well...

You watch TV in fullscreen mode? I watch a fair bit of TV but its playing in a window when I'm doing other stuff on the desktop, like typing this. If I wanted to watch TV proper I'd switch on the TV set and sit on the sofa...

Oh lord I want...

I still use the 4k Philips as a side monitor for leaving documentaries on and cartoons for the children. Im going to wall mount the 40 inch though.

The new A Creed running on 49 inch blew me away.

I tried a 34" UW, it was also curved. But after getting a larger desk I consider two 16:9 monitors to be more flexible and meet my needs. As a temp solution I even tried the UW with a 16:9 but the UW ended up being returned for several reasons.
Very personal tho as to what suits people and their needs and tastes.

I don't need it for work so 2x 16:9 monitors would be pointless for me.

Haven't got the space for a 40" TV either (which seems to be where 4K kicks in) and I think I would find it too big.

The monitor I have now is a perfect size for me (the 49" one would be nice but it's not happening!) I just like a curve and a higher resolution, but at the moment, I ain't prepared to pay the premium. Surely next year though, we'll see a breakthrough in price to sub £500.

I had an x34 for about 2.5 months and then I accidentally broke it due to having placed it unstably (while playing No Man's Sky). It was going to cost a touch more than new to have it repaired.
I never really liked the feeling of shorter height of picture and really the only benefit I felt from it was when watching movies in that ratio (I only use my best monitor for TV/Video & games).
I was very glad to go back to 16:9.
