anyone good with hijackthis?? plz read

AVG is also free and I believe it to be the most widely used freeware anti virus program - http://free.grisoft.com

Totally agree that Norton is one of the worst anti-virus programs. Like PC World. they prey on people's lack of knowledge of alternatives. Norton is horribly bloated and really slows your PC down.

guys, thanx for your help.
i ended up formating the partition this morning and installing vista again.
once up 5 mins later internet explorer failed to log onto the net altho i had it working initially. something about internet explorer failed to operate and then a list of things came up. i did a quick search on another pc and it warned of a virus.
basically iv done a full security wipe of the hard drive using kill disk and iv reformatted the whole drive.
if this dont work........well i will need more help

cheers

simon
what av then????? or does that open another can of worms lol. i do normally use avast or nod32

its something in the start up and shutdown thats possibly wrong

getting close to a format now!!

Have a look to see what's starting up, maybe try disabling a few things you don't need, try to narrow it down.

I've used StartUp Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) in the past whenever I've had similar problems.

If you format and do the exact same things you did this time chances are you'll end up with the exact same problems. Saying that though, it might help you to pinpoint the culprit a little easier if you monitor performance as you install all your programs and stuff.

Edit: We posted at exactly the same moment. Most of the stuff still applies though, so just see how you get on. NOD32 is arguably the best AV so there's no worries there.

It's VERY unlikely you got a Virus 5 minutes after installing Vista if you formatted for a fresh install, and then installed an AV program etc before you connected to the net.

NOD32 is fine, use that and only that on your system for AV protection. DON't install Avast at the same time as NOD32 is on or it will screw up your system.

I've just had a look at the price of NOD32 and it's now £30 for one licence - I'm sure when I bought it a few years ago it was <£20 for the one licence.

Two licences for £40 seems a better deal if you can get a pal to go halfers, or even three for £44.

run nod32 and found nothing then got a blue screen and rebooted. as soon as i go on the internet i get a blue screen or sometimes a black screen and it reboots.
this time iv rebooted in safe mode with networking and been able to type this

Sounds like maybe a driver problem to me, did you notice anything happening as you installed any drivers or anything?

Also, it would be a good idea to list your system specs at this point.

titan vulcan
corsair 4gb ddr3
seagate baracuda 500gb
ocz 5oow power
gigabyte gama790xt-ud4p pci express
ati radeon 4870 gfx card
amd phenom 2 x3 core 720

hijackthis shows up nothing

still ok in safe mode with networking on

superantispyware and malwarebytes are both good, if you download them make sure to update them first before doing a scan.

Also I'm no expert here but is there a chance this problem maybe hardware related, like a hdd thats about to fail? Perhaps download the manufactures diagnostic tool.

Atm it flashes up the blue screen and then just restarts, is that right? You'll need to see what the blue screen says before you can do anything else really, that's what I'd do anyway.

You need to open System in the Control Panel and go to the Advanced Tab>Start Up and Recovery>Settings and take the tick out of 'Automatically Restart'.

That will pause the blue screen to give you a chance to write the information down. It'll possibly give you a driver name at the top and there will be a row of numbers that look like a load of zeros, possibly 20 or 25 chars long. Write that down and post back what it says.

latest resulted blue screen resulted in this:
stop: 0x0000008e(0xc0000005,0xa93b623a,0xba50f0a0,0x00000000)
portcls.sys-address a93b623a base at a93a2000, datestamp 48025ccc

Just having a quick look at some of the things you listed there and portcls.sys seems to be to do with AC'97 onboard sound drivers - is that what you're using, if so, are there any updates for your motherboard available do you know?

You could try temporarily uninstalling the sound drivers to see if it solves the problem.

Also, apparently 0x0000008e seems to relate to RAM so I'd test yours just to make sure it's running ok - might not be that but it's a good idea to rule the possibility out. I use Memtest (http://www.memtest.org/) for RAM testing purposes - there's full instructions on the site.

That's just what I found from a quick Google but I'll have a more thorough look in a bit as I've got to go out just now .

Good luck :)

sounds more like a hardware issue mate as your HjT log is clean. Is your computer overclocked?

oops should really read the full thread before posting :shame face:

hi yes it WAS overclocked, iv restaored it to its basic settings now and seeing what happens.
iv downloaded the latest drivers from gigabyte and installed them, especially the audio as the blue screen possibly hinted at this.

is it the overclcock? i dont know at the moment, it had been running for about 4 days ok and now all this.virus warnings and blue screens.
im on xp pro at the moment not vista just because im happier finding my way around it (while im frustrated), avg virus for now and spybot

iv sent an email to overclockers hoping to get the oc details for the 3.3ghz overclock as this was 3.5ghz.

any more suggestions please fire away

AVG is awful. :(

Why?

I've had it installed for a number of years, as have all the PCs I have built or configured for people. It has caught and dealt with everything that has been thrown at it.

I'm just curious as to why you are making such a blanket generalisation and providing no evidence to back up your opinion. Which is exactly what it is. An opinion.

Depending on which site you look at, the "best antivirus" changes. Nod32 has the same score as AVG on this site so does that mean that Nod32 is equally awful?

I've never used NOD32 so am unable to comment on it, but as I said, AVG has never let me down and so I recommend it to people.

However, I do agree with your opinion that its very unlikely that cocker92 got a virus so quikly on his Vista machine.
