As the title says, preferably of 18gb size but any will do, if so can you please post your HDtach screenshot and is it loud?

thanks

I've got an maxtor altas4 10K and noise wise its pretty good compared to some scsi drives i've heard.

easy to live with for sure, although that's not much help if you want a seagate. :)

Thanks AndyC, can you post your HDtach results please :p

Hi Mikey, I'll need to sort some webspace somewhere first - however I have a problem that the transfer is stuck at 40MB/Sec, the drive is a U320

Fairly happy this is because of the convertor as stated and not the drive, and if you had a native 68pin sure there would be no issues.

Just trying to source a high end convertor at the mo, are you going 80 or 68pin ?

I can post it up once I have some webspace but I feel it won't tell you that much :(

Hi AndyC just post the image using ImageShack. Its not for me but I think my friend will probably go 68 pin. I saw a few cheetahs second hand, one 18gb 10k drive went for £4!
Thinking about getting one cheap for OS and apps.

Hi there I think so - touble is is knowing where to get a decent one looked around and they all look the same, I've emailed a guy on ebay (awaiting a reply) in the states as his seem different and stated they will run at full speed. Its all a bit annoying really but the disk is still fast but sure it should be faster.

Reading the info given to me by another helpful member (Thank you :) ) it can also be down to all the tracks not being wired and the unit defaulting to se speed as one cause.

Just an update the new sca adapter arrived this morning from the states and....

Very pleased, seems to have done the job, a big thank you to The_Official who gave plenty of advise.

I have the link to the adaptor and supplier but not sure of this will break the forum rules.

Looks very nice cavemanoc, is the burst speed always low on SCSI drives, my sata gets 220mb/s. That must have been quite an expensive setup, how much did it set you back and what SCSI controller do you have? I am contemplating buying a SCSI card and drive second hard but have been put off by cost of the RAID cards. Is it worth me getting a 10k cheetah for windows and putting all my other stuff on my SATA II hitachi deskstar?

Got lucky 2nd hand - Card+2 Drives + cable cost me £90 :D

Got an LSI U320 Card - capable of running 16 devices - now with 2*18Gb raid 0 for files and 1*18G for windows - awesome setup - thoroughly recomended - then add a large SATA for storage and you're set.

I got myself a 6 plug cable on fleabay (u320) for £20 and then paid an extra £5 for the terminator - Foxconn stuff - seems fine - that gives me up to 4 drives which suits me fine ;)

All in all really happy with the setup - blistering performance with only a few downsides:

1. Heat: have to tink about positioning and allow an extra fan for cooling
2. Noise: always said they're not as bad as people think - and generally they're not - then I defragged the whole lot in a one'r - WOW! - picked myself back up again and promised to do them one at a time in future :D

But seriously - well worth it!

(Not sure about the burst speed - seems a little odd to me that the Sata is better - still learning really, probably a setup thing - will keep investigating and let you know!)
