Anyone got a Hive motion sensor?

Any thoughts? Her indoors says if I want a Nest cam in the porch then the cheapo PIR sensor for our light has to go (it was a temporary/quick purchase when we first moved in anyway, meh).

We have a light like this on the porch ceiling and in my valiant attempts to add some sensible technology to the house as we refurb I'm thinking the best way is to fit a Hive smart bulb in there (we have Xiaomi and Hive stuff) and then maybe a Hive motion sensor somewhere hidden to activate it. We can then also leave it on and program it etc. to our hearts desire.

Anyway tldr; this line in the blurb caught my eye;
Always in the know
The moment your smart motion sensor detects activity, it sends a notification to your smartphone, tablet or Apple Watch.
Knowing how "basic" the Hive app is, my question is can you turn off these notifications? :)

Second question, do people use smart bulbs for outside lights much? Or do you rely on more old school tech that will work even when your wifi goes down?

Can’t help with the main part of your query but smart bulbs will just act as ‘dumb’ bulbs if the Wifi goes down - i.e. they can just be turned on/off at their switch as though they were run of the mill bulbs.

Yeah, I wonder if it reverts to on or off if your wifi goes down and it's on a schedule. Not great if you're on a two week holiday and leave a security light on a timer (we do this with a couple of smart bulbs and one clunky old-style timer in the front room) and your broadband drops out on day two!

I wouldn't touch hive non heating stuff with a barge pole tbh. I'll sell you a hue hub for cheap then you can do it properly :D

Yes you can turn the notifications off. I linked mine to my outside hive gu10 bulbs, unfortunately I tried to point it at a window and it doesn't register well tho but will move it.

If you could hear my other half complain about “pointless technology” in the house then you’d know what a waste of time that would be :D

If she had her way, we’d have a CRT telly and 4 channels. And yes we just had a blazing row about how a Nest cam in the porch would make us “look like those idiots in the Verisure adverts” (wtf?!)

I just got sent one of these for "free" after having to pay to update my Hive Hub . No idea what I will do with it.

Thanks. Glad you can turn them off. Yeah I don’t view Hive as very polished, we were persuaded to fit their mini thermostat when we changed our boiler with the new kitchen. I was angling for a Nest but alas that was too much like modern technology for my other half  lol

I’ll take it off your hands if you like! Although my other half is now saying a sensor is too much clutter outside and just wants the light on a timer…

I am sure I will find a use but seems like something that would be more useful outdoors than indoor. Struggling to think of something I want to happen when I move somewhere in my house. I mean if it could automatically flush the toilet when I stand up that would be useful but not sure it has that capability

I have a hue sensor on my toaster which means my kitchen and utility light come on. One on my WC rad turns the toilet light on. Using switches is for cave people :D

lol. Seen as we're on the subject, has anyone tried lightbulbs with integrated PIR sensors? Like these: https://theledspecialist.co.uk/daylight-and-motion-sensor-led-bulbs

Girlfriend bought some lovely filament style dumb bulbs for our stairways but we rarely use them because we've still got our cheapo automatic night-light type things that sit on the stairs.

I wonder if there's any filament style PIR LED bulbs out there?

I thought you were going to say it makes toast when you walk past in the morning.

Do set it so that the lights only comes on when dark outside? Can see myself ending up down some expensive rabbit hole all for a freebie!

is my wife you're other half by any chance as the above sounds exactly like her!! she'd still use bloody candles if she could, never mind a CRT telly!

You can disable notifications. I use my sensors for triggering the bulbs to come on with motion at night.

I have the whole Hive security system (HomeSheild), which much to my frustration they've said is going EoL in 2025. So whilst it will still work, I think the app won't and my very expensive camera loses a lot of it's features. I wouldn't invest any more time or money into Hive as they're not supporting these products. I'd like them to open up the camera firmware to at least give an RTSP stream, but looks like they're going down the e-waste route instead. They actually said they were stopping supporting this due to focus on environmental things...! Just avoid.

Yeah, coupled with the hue panels I have, it manages warmth of the light too.

I have one. Battery has died 2 times in 6 months. Slightly annoying.

But we use it to trigger the Hue lights to come on at 40% during hours of 7pm & 7am. Based on motion detected near stair.

Works really well for what I wanted it for. I plan to add a few more to the fleet. But i may go a complete custom route with cheaper sensors.

lol. My other half complains about having a nice telly and Sky. The amount of times I have to remind her that I work in the film industry and therefore have a slight ( ) interest in watching things properly, sheesh. Oh, and the full Sky package is absolutely free. Doesn't stop her complaining about it though  (No, I don't work for Sky)

I read that, shame. It feels like a lot of companies are giving up on smart home devices. Google haven't released the new v2 Nest doorbells over here, even what 18 months after they came out in the US. Which makes me extremely cautious. That coupled with the thread here about home assistants getting dumber.. it really feels like they are winding down on all that.

How would you get them to talk to the Hive (?) bulbs?

A family member has figured a way to rig up all the stuff. Got all the Hubs talking and what not. I'll ask him when i actually do it.

Currently, we have a HIVE hub for the thermostat, which the sensor works with. I also found in the Hive app that the Hue lights were present via the Hue Hub, so clearly there is some cross talk going on there.

The Hive hub does support the Hue lights to control them and add them to actions.

I think the whole thing is Zigbee based. I'm not sure if that means you can also take the Hive sensors out of their ecosystem. I did see one website that suggested that, but I don't have a more generic Zigbee hub to test with.

Following my other thread about my Xiaomi lights dying, we’re now looking at getting a set of bulbs to replace them.

I see Hive supports Hue, but do you need the Hue bridge (hub?) as well? Just wondering if we can get Hue bulbs without needing another hub thing.

We’ll probably just get some Hive bulbs to be honest- but Phillips do do the filament style ones..
