My lad (9) is asking for one for Christmas.

1) are they legal

2) do they set on fire

if the two questions above are are all good ..

3) where's the best place to get one please

Cheers

I believe some police forces say they will confiscate them if you're caught riding one on the pavement but have you ever seen a cyclist arrested for doing the same?

the cheap chinese ones have been known to burst into flames and i do believe they are illegal maybe just on the pavement? not sure about that one

what the name of that electric board that casey neistat rides on?

1. Not for use on pavements, not that should effect your decision whether your 9 year old kid is safe balancing on one of those next to a road.

2. Cheap ones that are within what i would think is a reasonable spend for a Christmas present for a young child are said to be risky and blame is usually put on the battery/power source but what you would find a reasonable spend is probably different to mine. Also would probably consider if your kid will go on it for a few days and then dump it in the garage for time to forget.

3. Internet

Son: "No??"
Dad: "No? Do you like the taste of your own puke?"
Son: "EW! NO!"
Dad: "Well, I told you once not to eat your puke, but you didn't listen and ate it right up"
Son: "!?!? what?? why are you telling me this!!"
Dad: "Well I told you it was for your own good, but you didn't want to know and was then sick a second time.... bile and pieces of chocolate everywhere.... such a waste"
Son: "Dad you are gross! stop it!"
Dad: "Well son, you buying that scooter, is like shovelling your own sick down your throat and while thinking you will look awesome."
Son: "...."
Dad: "Sometimes you need to live the experience.... but not today."
Son: "Wow dad you are the best!"
Dad: "Here is a Chopper bike instead. Now get a girlfriend."

You're welcome.

Neither chopper, "hover" or scooter look "cool" and he'll bin/stop using them all after one day :(

Also this.
They don't hover :(

Get him a mountain bike. Even better if you already have one, you can go somewhere nice together to make use of them! :)

Wrong
Wrong
and, don't quite know where you are going with the last one.

Wrong.
Vehicles must be approved via ECWVTA or MSVA in order to be licensed and registered. Self-balancing scooters would not currently meet the requirements of these schemes so are not legal for road use.
Yes. It is an offence under section 72 of the Highway Act 1835 to ride or drive a vehicle on the pavement. It is only an offence under this Act in England and Wales. In Scotland it is an offence under section 129(5) of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.

Wrong again.
There's no single reason why these hoverboards are exploding, and there's no sure-fire way to avoid potential catastrophe if you want to buy one yourself.

And
That hoverboard isn’t that cool

Because all my trustworthy news comes from The North Texas Daily.

I've been fined for riding on the pavement before. It was on a 10 m ish stretch from the road to a secure bike park. (Must have been the most jobsworthy officer in the area.)

See your point though.
