was just about to order a k800i then i saw this and thought do i need a pda ? well im sure i can convince myself i need one , but what are they like, are they slow and annoying like windows ? and they are quite big how irritating is it to use a phone that big ? and its only a 1.3mp camera is it really bad ? im upgrading from a w800i so the camera is a big drop for me :(
any opinions appreciated thanks

My boss had one, stay away from this phone! Big, bulky, random crashes, bluetooth doesnt always work, doesnt ring sometimes then tells you that you have a missed call.

Go for the Mini S, or wait till the newer version of the Mini S is out, T Mobile have it down as a Vario II at the moment. Much better spec. I had a Mini S but got rid because i just found it too much, plus i am gettin a PDA/Phone/Sat Nav through work :)

was looking at the mini s but no 3g :( and the updated version on tmobile is silly price , suppose i could just hang on for o2 to get it , but you all know what its like contracts up and i need/want a new phone :D

I have the T-Mobile version, the MDA Pro and I love it - never crashed on me, the bundled software/apps it comes with are pretty cool and there are plenty of 3rd party apps out there.

The best thing I use it for is mobile internet, with T-Mobile you get "unlimited" for £7.50/month and it does take a bit of a hammering ;) Plus it has wifi so I can sit at home and surf without having to fire up my laptop or main pc's :)

Okay, it's really a bit too large to stick in your back pocket but I have an old K700i I use if I'm going out anywhere..

hi Riddler , do you find it quicker than using your pc ? and have you tried minimo on it ?
i saw the web n walk on the tmobile site that is an excellent deal shame they wont let you use it as a modem though :( isnt 3g capable of speed of 3meg anyone had any problems with connecting with 3g or is the uk coverage pretty good now ?

Using it now to write this, forum browsing is fine and reading pretty much all sites is okay. It's not necessarily quicker but a hell of a lot more convenient to just grab the pro off the coffee table and surf. Not tried minimo.

I've used my pro as a modem a few times at work so I could play Eve Online and bypass our firewall during long lunches ;)

The only time I had connectivity probs was on Newquay's Fistral beach, could only get gprs but not 3g.

my exec is a year old, with a broken screen due to an impact when it was closed, slow as hell, misses calls, turns itself off, struggles with pockets, crashes. a firmware upgrade would probably do it good, but i still prefer it over a standard phone :D

I've had the T-Mobile Vario for just over a week now and I'm loving it!

All the fun(ctionality) of the MDA Pro in such a small little package. Whats more, an extra £40 got me a bluetooth satnav kit! Don't need to worry about nicking the family tomtom now :D

Highly recomended phone!

Had an exec, very sexy bit of kit, but it was a very heavy brick. So unless you really think you can live with humphing it around or your just gonna use it as a second mobile then please consider carefully. Mine was on the bay for sale after just a week. Great bit of kit but it's even bigger than a standard ipaq and they can be a bit cumbersome at times too.

got my grubby mits on a Tmobile one and an 02 One , tmobile is the better, infact its excellent. But the 02 version has a particular problem with its own 02 software which causes slowness , lockups and crashes.

Still , excellent devices anyhow :) would reccomend

I had a look at the o2 exec and the Vario 2. The exec has a little more power (500mhz I think?) but is so bulky and heavy. I opted for the Vario II (otherwise known as the MDA Tytn). It's a fantastic phone, I'm still in awe of it's capabilities and I'm in to my hardware. :)

400Mhz cpu, 64mb RAM. Qwerty keyboard and not much bigger than a normal phone. It looks great, screen is bright and very nice. Loads of pocket PC softwre to play around with.

If you need that extra 100Mhz for whatever reason and can handle the size, the exec would be better for browsing. Kind of like, midway between laptop and Pocket PC. If you can be happy with the slightly smaller screen (browsing the internet can be a tiny bit fiddly with the 320x240 screen) then get the Tytn simply because it fits in your pocket and can do eveything virtually as well as the exec.

Love my Vario II too!:D

Installed far too much software, games etc.

Would love my next PPC device to be just like the Vario II but with a higher res screen. Although the size is great, it is a bit on the thick side. Would be fantastic if they could get the keyboard section exactly the same thickness as the screen section.

I'm with you GuruJockStrap, it's not very thick anyway but having it a little thinner with a higher screen resolution would rock. Would make having tiny writing readable. I don't know why no-one has made a browser that shows the full page zoomed out and then you drag the stylus over the area you want to read and it magnifys it. Would make browsing so much nicer. No clicking back and forth to read lines of text. :)

Not 100% sure but I think the Internet browser on latest Symbian phones (N80, N73 etc) allows you to do that. Also think that the source code has been released for it so with a bit of luck we might see something in the future.

In the meantime, other browsers you can try:

Opera
Minimo
NetFront

Also came across Thunderhawk, which looks interesting: http://www.bitstream.com/wireless/products/pocketpc/index.html

Going to give that a try now.

I'm using Opera at the moment, seems pretty good. Let me know how you get on with Thunderhawk, I could do with a decent easy to see browser.
