Anyone got a Suhr?

Hi all!

After some advice and suggestions on a new guitar, tried posting on guitar forums and just got arguments and no one answering my question.

Anyone got/played both a Suhr S3/Standard series and a Suhr Modern?

I've got a Rasmus GG Spec which I love and has been my go to workhorse for the past few years taking the scratches in its stride. I need another decent guitar to keep my Rasmus as a backup. I've got lots of terrible guitars so for years I've borrowed my singers guitars as backups since he has lots of lovelies (tele custom shop, Original 68 les paul etc) none of which really suit me, and also a bit unfair to use his gear.

I don't want to spend TOO much because the band I'm currently in is an energetic rock band so scratches etc will happen.

I've seen that Peach Guitars have a second hand S3 that looks lovely and is the same price as the Modern Satin. I like the Modern Satin of course, but then I think it would basically be my guitar but with Suhr on the headstock instead of Rasmus. So I thought the S3 might be an interesting change, but just wondering if anyone has any feedback on the feel of the two in comparison?

I live far far away from any Suhr dealers, so buying blind online is pretty much how all my shopping goes! :D

Oh I should add, I did think of getting a Modern with a 'pretty top' as that would be different to what I have, but they're all 1k extra for a pretty top and nothing else. If I didn't mind scratching it, I'd buy one with exotic wood etc for the 2k extra, but paying 1k extra for some paint over the same normal wood seems too much for me.

I can't help, because I've never played another Suhr, and would love a Rasmus as a 'backup' (I'd be happy with a Squier for a backup) but there's never Suhr threads on here, so I'll just post mine :D

Is the 1k worth it for a fancy top? Probably not but it's nice to look at.

I like your style! And I don't blame you for posting it.

Basically my ideal would be an exotic Korina/cocobolo modern with the aldrich pickups etc, but spending 4k on a guitar I'm likely to knock is not fun. I gig a lot and tend to get it knocked about a fair bit so I need something more like a workhorse. For this my Rasmus has been great, however I need another guitar just in case (Although I really don't break strings often.)

The problem I have is that my ideal would be another modern. The modern satin is nicely affordable (expensive but not terrible) so I wouldn't need to worry too much. But it's exactly the same as my Rasmus. Same wood, same pickups, bridge etc, built in a different place... but pleked on the same machine to the same specs.

So I thought about getting one with a pretty top... but 1k extra for a pretty top is crazy when I know I'm going to knock it.

While I'm here sharing pretty pics I might as well share a pic of what I'd buy if I didn't gig...

Ooof! Although if it was me specing from new, I'd miss the inlays out, and perhaps have a slightly different Fret board wood choice... still pretty though :D

I've put that on 'If I win the Lottery' list.

Gorgeous isn't it? It's not terribly priced, it's 4k dollars. And Mattsmusic has decent custom prices so you could spec your own for around the same price (and then you'd get to choose other little things, like i'd drop the inlays and switch out fretboard wood). But it's a lot of money for a guitar I'm bound to drop or knock against things haha. If I just played at home I'd splash out and then just stare at it all day :D

But it's a heck of a lot of money! The second hand S3 I'm looking at is 1,350 or so without VAT for me... kinda different!

One of my guitars fell over last week on stage , I'd die if it was something that price.
My 78 Strat looks like it's been dragged down the road and through a hedge.

Yeah exactly! When you use them frequently things happen no matter how careful you are. I've had stands fail, vibrations knock them over/out etc. So many different things can happen, people move them without knowing etc. If I was super loaded I'd have it and gig with it. But I couldn't have a guitar that nice and not gig with it... so I can't have the guitar haha.

This is what I've been looking at:

Or £200 more http://www.peachguitars.com/guitars/electric-guitars/solid-body/suhr-modern-satin-hh.htm

If there was a Modern with a pretty top for around 1800 I'd have it for sure. But instead they jump to 2,500. And the only difference is literally the top. Would be the same wood, pickups etc. An extra 700 or 900 on top of the S3 is just insane for a top layer (when I know I'll drop it haha)

Edit: New price is fairly similar... so if there was a second hand modern pro I'd have it in a heartbeat, but I've not seen one yet :(

I've noticed virtually everyone on Jamtrack Central seems to own one. They seem pretty cool.

Andelusion, what are you up to these days musically out of interest?

Guthrie seems to have taken them from out of a very niche market into only a slightly niche market :D

I've not played both, so can't offer advice there. But personally i would go for the one that's a bit different to what you already have. If your Rasmus and the Modern Satin are pretty much the same, I'd have thought it would be more fun to have something that offers some different sounds or opens you up to new playing ideas etc.

I am a Modern Satin owner and i absolutely love mine - plain wood finish, HSH, original Floyd. It plays amazingly and i can't think of a single fault with it. I think Guthrie Govan once described Suhr guitars as 'eerily perfect' and i would agree. But i wouldn't buy another Modern Satin now that i have one, i'd rather have guitars that each offer me something different.

But hey, it's personal preference and it's your own personal choice really.

Don't forget to post if you don't mind! Would love to see a comparison :) Thanks

Your wish is my command. Had a week of not feeling well, along with things going wrong at work, so apologies for the lateness.

Where to start? Well, I bought the Rasmus (M-202 - Modern Floyd Rose, Dual Humbuckers) first. I had several guitars already, but wanted a workhorse, something that played well, but was discrete, and not so precious that dinging it wouldn't bother me too much. The Rasmus seemed to fit the bill, and I was very happy.

After finishing my degree, I decided to treat myself, and, it was a toss up between a proper Suhr, or a PRS, and, as I already had other good guitars, I wanted something that really was more of a stay at home guitar. I'm not good enough to take something like that on stage and not disappoint.

In the end, I opted for the Suhr. I saw it up at Guitar Guitar in Newcastle months before, and, as I was walking out, remember muttering under my breathe "one day..."; it really was like nothing I have played before.

It's a Modern Carve Top, Mahogany Body with 3/4" Quilted Maple
Indian Rosewood Fretboard 10"-14" Radius
Chrome Hardware - Hipshot tuners and a 510 Bridge
Aldrich Humbuckers in Zebra
Mother of Pearl Inlays

First impressions were:

  • The case smells amazing when you open it! :D
  • Craftsmanship is stunning, amazing flamed maple.
  • Upon plugging in, the increase in output shocked me, the pickups roar, compared to those in the Rasmus, which are both quieter and deeper in voicing. (In reality, you could probably get 99% of that sound form the Rasmus with a pickup upgrade).
  • Action was as close to perfect as I have played, straight out of the box (like you would expect). Certainly better than the Rasmus, very low, but still very clean, even when bending, or picking with pressure.

In retrospect, I should not have bought this guitar, bought a cheap car (instead of overspending like I did), and saved for a mortgage deposit. But, I had to scratch that itch...

The choice is yours...

L@@K! Suhr Modern Pro Bengal Burst HSH Unused. New condition. Awesome! ;)
