Anyone got any sample photos of a camera with a 35mm 1.8 prime?

What sort of distance would you have to be from a model (as in, human) to use this?

Just set your 18-55 zoom to 35 and you'll have the answer.

As people have said it lets more light in so you can take pictures when there's less light. It's also better quality and will produce sharper images then the 18-55. Generally prime lenses (ones that don't have any zoom adjustment) give good quality for their price because they're design is much simpler.

Just bare in mind that when you're using it at f1.8 the depth of field will be much shallower then anything you'll have experienced with the 18-55. So you need to be more careful to get the focus nailed.

F stops are the square roots of the powers of 2 - which sad as it may be is how I remembered them until they became memorised !

2^0 = 1 -> f1
2^1 = 2 -> f1.4
2^2 = 4 -> f2
2^3 = 8 -> f2.8
2^4 = 16 -> f4

etc etc
