Just wondering. Got some myself (late I know!) the other day. Got 2 years of that, then surgery to correct my jaw.

Anyway, they've given me lectures on brushing my teeth thoroughly, lest holes and what not would appear. Obviously clean teeth is imperative, but is it really that serious? The way they were going on made it sound like if I touch a single fizzy drink I'm doomed!

Also, had ulcers? My top ones have given me massive ulcers already. Very painful. Lost the damn wax they gave me.

So yeah.

P.s surely this dosen't count as a medical thread?

Sugar frequencies. Your teeth can withstand three or four daily assuming no stagnation.
Fluoride toothpaste helps usually but it won't get everywhere.

Minimise the frequencies, no decay, anything you eat(basically) counts as a frequency.
So quit snacking, take any sweet things immediately after a meal, take and juices or drinks with the meal, not inbetween.

I had a removable one for 2 years! Was hell!

I get ulcers easy and with them always rubbing it caused me pain!!!
That and removable ones sit between your molars, so painful sliding em in and out!!
I had mine to correct my jaw as it was 'too far back' had 2 chunks of plastic so when i closed my mouth it yanked my jaw forward!...

Anyways, you'll be fine with fizzy drinks and such in moderation just remember that with a fixed one you have many more nooks and cranny's for bacteria to hide and build up so its good to keep sugar and sticky things to a minimum!
Ulcers i find anbesol liquid is brilliant, burns for a second but then numbs it and kills of bacteria!

I had braces when i was at school. Didnt realy do anything out of the ordinary in terms of cleaning (also i did used to pick the bits of food out of them with a tooth pick). Fizzy drinks, well i used to drink. I even used to chew gum. Didnt cause me any problems. My cheeks use to get ulcers etc from where the wires poked out of either end (especially when you have them tighened).

Very interesting, didn't know that.

Out of curiosity, I assume alcohol isn't to damaging? At university so drinks are fairly regular. Usually Guinness + Whisky.

I wish my jaw stuff was just pieces of plastic. :(

They're cutting part of my upper and lower jaws away to bring them back in line. They're like 1.4cm out haha.

cheers.

So ulcers are par for the course? Fair enough I guess. Question of MTFU. :D

When I had braces I pretty much used Listerine mouthwash after every meal.

Good idea, I'll buy some tonight.

I had braces between 15-17. Pretty late on I guess. Wasn't ideal cos I started having girlfriends at that age, and i had rubber bands in the back on my mouth, one of them would occasionally ping off and fire into her mouth during a snog.. Needless to say I was dumped 5 months into the relationship.

Get them before you start nailing the laydeez.

Just be sensible. I had plenty of fizzy drinks when I had mine and it did no harm at all.

Make sure you don't eat anything hard, like skitles :p

Also - BUY SOME MORE WAX!!!! It's cheap and mnimizes pain!

I'm nearly 22. :p

It never really bothered me that much, but I reckon it's a worthwhile investment now.

Where do you buy replacement wax?

Getting ulcers from being stabbed in the inside of your face is par for the course. A few times I ended up having to rip the wire out of mine because it was stabbing me so much and it'd be ages before I could get an appointment (go go NHS...).

My "18 month" treatment lasted from age 16-21 >_>

.........

Haha, can't have any deviation myself, it's a long enough process as it is. Got to have some wisdom teeth removed in less than a month.

Apparently they are right on the nerve line or something so there is a chance of loss of sensation to the tongue and lower part of the face?

Don't want to risk general anaesthetic so it's going to be consciously done.

Can't escape it for the jaw one though, which has me really nervous. What can go wrong usually does!

FFS. Braces broke on Saturday (brackets have come loose). Can't get through to the sodding department to get them mended.

Annoying.

Had them as a teenager wasn't really a big deal, didn't do anything out of the ordinary cleaning wise.

I can never understand people who didn't get these when they were free as children, having all messed up teeth is a real turn off.

Cheers mate.

:p

Seriously though, it never really bothered me per se, but I know I'd look pretty decent once they're done.

I have perfect teeth, so, when my little brother had to get braces, I naturally ridiculed him.
