What do people think of it? BMW charge 900 pounds for it which to me sounds like a lot!

My new car has it and I never really noticed it was there until I took my girlfriends 3 series for a drive today, I almost hit the wall in the car park because I did not turn the steering wheel enough :D

It one of those things you don’t really know how good it is until you are without it.

It’s supposed to be really Useless if you take your car on the track though

apparently the steering is quite vague on twisty roads?
and yeh, i can't imagine it being particularly useful on the track :p
i think its just a gimmick tbh..

My old e38 BMW 728i had speed sensitive steering, it was great.

Certainly not vague on twisty roads!

I wonder if you refer to something else? - Speed sensitive power steering has been around for a while and is not, imo, something just for a track day - if anything I'd expect many track cars to have no power steering at all.

Hardly a gimmick, jump into an old Ford that has got power steering but not speed sensitivity and you soon realise how good the modern stuff is!

Did you get the wrong end of the stick there bud?

I Don't think so mate  - I know of a place that prepares BMW race cars, the last e30 M3 they prepared that I looked at had no PAS at all, hence my comment. :)

No-one was saying it was for the track, and you seemed to be arguing that it wasn't, thats all :)

Yah what I was saying that its probably not suitable if you plan take your car on the track however for town driving its very good. I still don’t know if I could bring myself to pay 900 pounds for it or not.

Had it in the clio it was ****, nothing like going round a long corner then the steering would go light and you would start thinking am i about to understeer into something or what!

Is everyone talking about the same thing?

It seems Paras is talking about a system that adjusts the speed of the steering rack at various speeds and everyone else is talking about variable load steering where the steering feels heavier at higher speeds... or maybe I'm reading it wrong

Aren't both the descriptions above for speed sensitive power steering then?

Yah I think people are thinking of something different. On my car when I am parking the car and turn the steering wheel 180’ I get full lock but at high speed if I make bigger movements the wheels only turn a little.

I'm amazed they're allowed to get away with offering the active steering tbh, it strikes me as hideously dangerous for the very reasons you describe - it's a fundamental change to the control systems of the car which can lead to confusion and mistakes.

I've got it on my clio, very light at low speeds, but firms up after about 20/30mph, seems to work pretty well, I've got no complaints about it on my car.
